Widyawati has helmed Indonesia’s state-owned energy giant Pertamina since 2018, and in 2022 reported record profits—$3.8 billion, an 86% increase over the previous year. Revenue surged to $84.9 billion, up 47.6% in the same period, due to an 8% increase in oil and gas output. The company, which operates in dozens of countries, has struggled with declining output, and earlier this year, in a bid to boost supply, Pertamina and with Malaysia’s energy company Petronas, bought out Shell’s stake in a long-delayed Indonesian gas project. Shifting to cleaner, low-carbon forms of energy remains another priority for Pertamina, which this year continued to pursue partnerships and investments around an array of strategies including geothermal projects, biofuel production, carbon capture utilization and storage, and battery development for electric motorcycles.
