Three years ago, Carol Tomé left retirement to join United Parcel Service (UPS) as the first woman CEO in its 116-year history. Prior to that, she had spent nearly 25 years at Home Depot in numerous roles, concluding her tenure there as chief financial officer. This year, Tomé juggled the continuing growth of online shopping, including that of the e-commerce giant Amazon. UPS is trying to boost efficiency and minimize mistakes by relying on technologies like radio frequency identification tags on packages. She also narrowly avoided a labor strike by brokering a contract that gave UPS workers higher wages and improved working conditions. In the first quarter of 2023, prior to union negotiations, the package delivery company’s revenue crossed $100 billion for the first time since its founding.
