Hwang oversees a team of 26,000 at the world’s largest pharmaceutical company, and her organization is responsible for delivering Pfizer’s 600 drugs to patients in 185 countries. With $100 billion in revenue in 2022—more than half of it from its COVID vaccine and treatment, Paxlovid—Pfizer is as big as it has ever been and Hwang is a key player in navigating its post-pandemic future. Among the challenges ahead: the impending loss of $17 billion in sales due to patent expirations between 2025-2030. Pfizer’s ambitious plan is to launch 19 new products in an 18-month period, and as commercial lead, Hwang is responsible for their success. It's up to her to prepare the market by working with insurers, governments, policymakers, and global health entities to establish price and access. Hwang, in her 27th year at Pfizer, says growing up in apartheid-era South Africa has shaped her worldview and her focus on sustainable global health equity. She serves on the boards of UPS and the US China Business Council, among others.
