- Great Place to Work
Employees say:
"They really care about me and the people that work here. They want me to feel and be my best self, in and out of work. I've worked here for almost 11 years, and I will be forever grateful. I had a devastating house fire in 2014, and the kindness and compassion through financial and, most importantly, emotional support I received from not only my management team and co-workers but the EAP resources will be something I will always remember and cherish."

Employees say:
"I believe Wegmans is able to give every single employee an opportunity to grow. Whether that be within the company, as a professional, or even just as a person, Wegmans gives every employee what they need to be their best self. I have seen a great deal of people become more confident, more outgoing, and more professional while working here, including myself. There is something new to learn every day at work and even more opportunities to become a part of the growth that Wegmans sees. Focus groups, close management relationships, and the Dish app give every single employee a chance to better themselves, their team, and the company as a whole."

Appearing on the Best Companies to Work For list every year for over a quarter-century, East Coast supermarket chain Wegmans has committed itself to growing employee well-being since 1953, when CEO Robert Wegman introduced benefits for all staff and raised wages. Wegmans hasn’t laid off an employee in its 107 years of operation. Its ethos of showing care for workers has extended to introducing name tags to remove barriers to non-native staff and making online language courses available to those who wish to strengthen their English-language skills. In 2023, Wegmans introduced improved hair covers for locs and textured hair. To better educate employees on the resources available to them, Wegmans rebranded its worker assistance program in 2022. The company also expanded its LiveWell offerings last year to introduce TogetherAll, an anonymous online community for peer-based mental health support.

The 107-year-old grocery chain based in Rochester, N.Y., has made Fortune’s Best Companies list every year since its 1998 launch. Wegmans employs over 53,000 workers and maintains a $15 minimum wage, nearly double the national average. Workers laud the privately owned company for its intensive training program, commitment to flexible scheduling, and focus on providing employees the opportunity for advancement. For the past five years, Wegmans has consistently reviewed each job opening with a college degree requirement and shifted the language to say “preferred,” putting the emphasis instead on skills and relevant job experience. Still, Wegmans invests heavily in its employees’ education, giving away over $6 million a year in its scholarship competition: Since the program’s 1984 launch, Wegmans has awarded $135 million in scholarships to more than 44,000 employees.

Employees say:
"I truly feel empowered in this company to voice my ideas, opinions, and concerns to not only my managers, but to people in corporate as well. I know my team also feels empowered in the same regard when it comes to sharing opinions with me. So, I truly believe everyone, from part-timers to managers, is given the space to share. This empowerment to share not only helps make work more efficient and easier for everyone, but it also extends to personal life. Many times, employees share with managers their personal struggles, which allows management to help them work through said struggles by offering resources, flexibility in the schedule, or just a listening ear."

All managers and employees that I've interacted with, my department managers included, have strived to get to know me individually as an employee. They make sure that I have time to balance both work and my personal life, and make sure that I am given new opportunities to grow in my department."

Now in its 106th year of operation, the grocery chain based in Rochester, N.Y., has a cultlike following—Wegmaniacs to those in the know. And that’s thanks in large part to its nearly 48,000 store employees who have a deep knowledge of the supermarket’s more than 50,000 products. Employees appreciate the company’s training, as well as its flexible scheduling policy. The privately held operation is also known for its work-scholarship program for high schoolers that incentivizes students to graduate. These kinds of benefits have created a bit of a cultlike following among employees, too. Wendy Gallucci, who manages the Penfield, N.Y., store, describes it as a “family culture”—and she means that literally. The 31-year Wegmans vet has two children who now also work for the company (some 20% of employees are related to someone else who works at the supermarket chain). Wegmans is one of only four companies that have appeared on this list every year since its launch 25 years ago. Read more: Shoppers are obsessed with Publix and Wegmans. Here’s what it’s really like to work there.

Employees say:
“Wegmans has always done an amazing job making the company feel like a family first and a business second. To do that with over 50,000 employees is truly incredible. They give back at the end of the year to all of the employee's 401ks. The fundraisers they do throughout the year, the donations, really shows how they give back to the communities they're in. Leading the way in composting and recycling to help our climate. Being a welcoming, accepting and inclusive workplace really allows for a big range of diversity. Their competitive pay and benefits. They really far surpass any of their competitors.”

Employees say:
“I am so glad that Wegmans has really embraced diversity! Working with all different kinds of people makes my heart so happy. Inclusion is so important to me in my every day life and I am ecstatic that I can have that at my place of employment as well. We want everyone to feel comfortable here and welcome, no matter your race, sexual orientation, gender, etc., and I think that's pretty amazing! Wegmans feels like a safe space for all of us. I also appreciate the resources Wegmans provides in regards to our LiveWell program where we offer assistance with therapy, financial counseling, and so much more. It's great to know we have so much help if, and when, it's needed. Our in-store employee advocates are wonderful too!”

Employees say:
“Very people-focused and cares about developing their people, especially me being a young woman. I have been granted multiple opportunities that other young women my age at other companies have not been. Starting at Wegmans when I was a teenager, I had severe anxiety and Wegmans worked with me to overcome that and feel comfortable talking to people. Wegmans, through their rigorous interview process, along with having to interview every time you post for another department, has allowed me to gain interview skills stronger than anyone else my age, and I feel confident that if I were to interview for something, I would have a strong, confident interview, and be able to showcase my personal skills and talents.”

Wegmans employees became heroes to many overnight in 2020 as Americans realized the physical and emotional toll of keeping the country fed during the pandemic. Its 105 stores gained 3,500 employees over the past year; about 40% of the workforce is full-time. The New York–based grocery chain worked hard to keep those staffers safe, retraining restaurant workers to service meat and seafood counters and offering job-protected unpaid leave for those who were worried about working in person. (Wegmans has historically provided generous benefits for the grocery industry, including a month of fully paid parental leave.) “It wasn’t just employees stocking empty shelves, doing extra cleaning and sanitizing around the store [that made Wegmans a great place to work this year],” one employee notes. “It was a combination of those things that helped us get through this pandemic.”

According to another millennial worker: "Management actually cares about its employees and always asks how we are doing when we come into work or are just shopping. I have worked at other places and always felt like I couldn't go to management with a problem but here at Wegmans that has never been a problem. I always feel comfortable going to them for any reason."

Wegmans “eat-well, live-well” philosophy extends beyond its grocery stores and into its benefits. Employee wellbeing is a top concern for this employer. Wegmans covers 85% to 100% of workers and their dependents’ health care premiums and also offers onsite blood pressure screenings and immunizations. The grocer makes an effort to reward outstanding work, handing out gifts for employment anniversaries and team-nominated awards for workers living up to the company’s values. Wegmans employees also provides employees a wide degree of flexibility by allowing workers to block out their availability ahead of time online. “We as employees are empowered to have fun and show sincere excitement while running our business,” said one employee. “The excitement is felt by our customers and results in an amazing place to work.” Read the Great Place to Work review.
