"When I started working for Marriott 11 years ago, I remember meeting a lot of of property associates with decades of Marriott experience. I didn't understand how so many people could end up working for a company for 20-30 years with no desire to leave. It started to make more sense when I learned about the core company value of Putting People First, all people: our guests, our communities, and our associates. From an associate perspective, Marriott makes it known that they want to internally hire for open positions, and they truly give you the tools that you need to take those next steps."
The hotel colossus, founded in 1927, operates almost 8,800 locations in more than 139 countries. Over the last few years, the company has launched several programs aimed at improving flexibility, choice, and belonging for all associates. Marriott has comprehensive compensation and benefits offerings, such as health care coverage, work/life support benefits, well-being support, retirement savings, and an employee stock purchase plan. For the parents in its workforce, Marriott offers discounts to over 2,000 childcare providers and emergency drop-in day care. In 2022, the company announced Bridging the Gap, a multiyear, $50 million development program that addresses the financial barriers underrepresented groups face in developing and owning hotels. It’s also built on its human trafficking awareness program, which hotels often serve a critical role. The program, launched in 2016, has now been taken by a record 1.2 million Marriott associates, who are equipped to spot the signs of trafficking and take action to stop it. Marriott has worked with the American Hotel and Lodging Association Foundation and ECPAT-USA to make the training available to the hospitality industry at no cost.
Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For 2023 The onset of COVID-19 hit the hospitality industry hard, and the past few years have been challenging, even for a multinational that encompasses over 8,000 properties under 30 leading brands spanning 139 countries and territories. Yet Marriott continues to work toward a better employee experience by building care into its DNA and actively listening to team members’ needs. Over the past year, Marriott has enhanced its retirement savings program, boosting matching, reducing vesting time frames, and broadening eligibility. With an eye toward inclusivity and diversity, Marriott also rolled out part-time management positions, which the company says allows it to tap into a broader talent pool. Moves such as these buffer employees’ trust in the company and helped Marriott jump from No. 23 in 2022 into the top 10 this year.

Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For 2022 As the hospitality industry inches back from its pandemic low point, Marriott continues to look out for employees with increased mental health support—including online resources to help workers manage stressful situations—and paid sick time for employees who are unable to work because of a positive COVID-19 diagnosis or who have been required to quarantine because of exposure. Managers of the family-run company “pride themselves in their take-care culture of treating employees as you would treat a guest,” one staffer says. The international hotel chain has focused initiatives to recruit and support employees from a wide set of backgrounds, including setting a goal to hire at least 1,000 veterans in 2021. It also has a partnership with the International Rescue Committee to hire refugees.

“I am proud of the support Marriott is giving to women during these times when constitutional rights are being questioned as well as the support for LGBTQ+ community. I fall into the category where family planning or gender rights do not apply - but I am fortunate enough to work with a diverse group of individuals. These social issues impact my work family, so they impact me. Thank you for protecting and standing by my work family.”
Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For 2021 Like all hospitality businesses, Marriott suffered in 2020. The company furloughed tens of thousands of workers from its 842 U.S. locations, but kept out-of-work hotel staffers in the loop with monthly voluntary calls in which the furloughed could learn about Marriott’s status and its prospects of economic recovery. The company also helped those who did not expect to return to Marriott to seek jobs in industries that were hiring. “I never once felt I was alone over the past eight months,” notes one furloughed employee. Some laid-off workers, however, rallied for better severance pay and rehire rights.

"What I find unique about Marriott is that the company has been able to stay true to its core values over the years. Employees at any level of the organization are aware of the company’s culture and core values. When asked, Bill Marriott would often acknowledge that the key to his success was the employees. All these years later, the simple concept of ‘take care of associates and they'll take care of the customers,’ still rings true. There is flexibility and a focus on the balance of work and home life that you do not typically find in large corporations. However, what truly makes Marriott a great place to work are the people. Observing just my department, we are sixteen strong with 267 combined years of Marriott experience. We work as a cohesive team valuing each other’s opinions and working together to achieve company goals."

"This company offers and supports employees' desire to work in different teams. You can see it played out in the number of people who have long careers with MI. It's not uncommon to hear about 10, 15, 25 years working at the company. It's inspiring!"
