Clean the spot using the antibacterial soap and use the razor to remove the unwanted hair growth. Remocing hair growth from the surface of your skin helps to give a clean and neat look to your temporary tattoo. After this, apply the deodrant stick on the spot so that the tracing paper can easily stick to the skin.

Apply the Tracing Paper

The next step is to apply the tracing paper with the design onto the skin and press it gently. Do not rub the paper or press it hardly else it will smudge the ink of the tattoo on your skin. Sharpies are the form of pen-style permanent markers which were first introduced in 1964. These markers come in different inks with different styles like fine point sharpie, ultra-fine point sharpie, twin tip sharpie, chisel tip sharpie, retractable tip sharpie, etc. In my previous articles, I have explained the several methods of getting temporary tattoos, but one of the easiest methods of getting temporary tattoos is by using sharpies. But the main question that arises is that are sharpie tattoos safe for application on the skin? or do they possess certain chemicals which are harmful to your skin? Let’s read further to clear your all doubts.

Are Sharpie Tattoos Safe?

According to the ACMI (The Art and Creative Material Institute, Inc.) certification, the sharpie markers bear the ‘non-toxic’ label, still, the company advises not to use these markers on the skin since some of them contain harmful chemicals which can be dangerous for use. The sharpie pens come in several varieties and among all those, the fine point sharpies are considered the safest ones for use on skin. Though these fine point sharpies are considered safe, still these should not be used near the eyes and mouth. According to the studies, the other varieties of the sharpies like Sharpie Magnum, Sharpie King-Size, and Sharpie Touch-Up contain the chemical compound ‘Xylene’ which can be harmful and can cause drowsiness, sleepiness, fainting, headache, nausea, etc.

The ingredients of the sharpies include n-propanol, cresol, n-butanol, and diacetone alcohol. Though a very less quantity of the chemical compound propanol is used in several skin antiseptics and cosmetics, it can also have some side effects. The major side effects of propanol include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, increased heart rate, etc.
Cresol has antibacterial properties and is used in several pesticides and disinfectants. Despite having all these properties, it can cause severe skin burns, rashes, allergies, etc.
The chemical compound n-butanol is used in several industries for different uses like cleaning, polishing, coating, finishing, etc. It is also considered safe for use in different food items and beverages as an artificial food coloring in some countries. But it can cause skin and eye irritation with the repeated contact.

The process of getting a temporary tattoo is very easy and any person can follow it while sitting at home. You don’t have to wait for your appointments with the tattoo artists and sit for long hours to get tattooed. The temporary tattoos are painless in nature, inexpensive, and you can get several tattoos according to the different occasions of your choices. In this article, I have explained the various methods of making a temporary tattoo with a sharpie without using baby powder.

Using the Perfume

For making the temporary tattoos using the perfume you need to have the following things:

Sharpie
Alcohol-Based Perfume
Tracing Paper
Corn Flour/Talcum Powder/Hair Spray

Tracing of the tattoo

You need to trace the image of the tattoo that you want to have on your body. For this, you need to select a suitable design for yourself. You can look for several options online and draw them on a piece of paper. Now take a sheet of tracing paper and cut it from the sides according to the size of the tattoo so that it becomes easier for you to copy it. Use the sharpie to trace the design. For this method, I have used a black-colored sharpie to draw the tattoo. You can use several colored sharpies to get these tattoos according to your wish.

Application of the perfume

After tracing the image of the tattoo, apply an alcohol-based perfume on the area where you want to have the tattoo. The perfume should be applied from at least 6inches away from the surface. Let’s wait for 2-3 minutes and allow the perfume to dry off naturally.

Application of the tracing paper

After the perfume dries off completely, apply the tracing paper with the traced image of the tattoo on the area of the application. Press it for a few minutes (2-3 minutes) so that the tattoo’s ink gets stuck to the skin properly.

Peeling off the tracing paper

After pressing it for a few minutes, peel off the tracing paper slowly. This step should be done very carefully and patiently so that the ink of the tattoo doesn’t get smudged. After peeling it off, you will notice a glimpse of the traced image formed on the skin.

Draw the tattoo

Now use the sharpie to draw the tattoo on the image formed on the skin. I used the black-colored ink sharpie for the drawing.

Cornflour or talcum powder

After drawing the tattoo on the skin, I used talcum powder so that the ink of the tattoo gets stick to the surface of my skin. You can also use cornflour for this purpose. Some people prefer to use hairspray instead of any powder. Your tattoo is ready now!

Without using perfume or tracing paper

Requirements:

Cleansing Wipes

This is one of the easiest methods of getting temporary tattoos since it requires only 2 ingredients. You need to follow the following steps to get your favorite tattoo in a few minutes.

Design selection

The most important step in this method is to select the design of the tattoo. You can select different shapes, designs, patterns, or quotes for your tattoo. Try to select the simple one so that it becomes easy for you to copy.

Copy the design

After selecting the best design of your choice, the next step is to copy it directly on the surface of your skin where you want to have the tattoo. Don’t forget to clean the surface using cleaning wipes or cotton pads so that your skin becomes oil and dirt-free. For copying the design use the sharpie for any color according to your requirements. I chose a sharpie with black-colored ink for drawing the tattoo.

Apply talcum powder or cornflour

After drawing the tattoo, I applied the talcum powder. You can also use cornflour in case you don’t have the talcum powder at your place.

Using pen, sharpie, and toothpaste

Requirements:

Toothpaste
Ball Pen
Cleansing Wipes
Cornflour/Talcum Powder
Sharpie
Balm

Using the toothpaste

Before applying the toothpaste, clean the area well and apply a small quantity of the toothpaste to the area where you want to have the tattoo. After applying it, rub it thoroughly on the skin. Now take the tissue paper or cleansing wipes and clean the paste from the surface.

Use the ball pen

Now with the help of a ball pen, draw the design of the tattoo of your choice. For this purpose, I have taken a black-inked ball pen.

Talcum powder or cornflour

After drawing the tattoo on the skin, apply a small amount of talcum powder or cornflour on your tattoo so that your tattoo gets stick to your skin properly.

Use the sharpie

Now re-draw the design on the existing one using the sharpie. For this method, I have used the blank-inked sharpie to re-draw the design. You can use sharpies of several colors also in case you want to have a colorful tattoo. The above-mentioned steps from ‘using the ball pen’ to ‘using the sharpie’ should be repeated several times (2-3times).

Use the balm

After following the above-mentioned steps several times, I applied the balm on my tattoo to give it a neat and clean look. You can use vaseline also instead of the balm. Your tattoo is ready now! This temporary tattoo using the ball pen with a sharpie will be going to stick to your skin for several days.

Following are some of the important steps which you need to follow to the temporary tattoo using the sharpie:

The main important thing which should be kept in mind before the application of any temporary tattoo is the sensitivity of your skin. If your skin is highly sensitive then you should avoid getting these tattoos as the ink of the sharpie may cause some allergic reactions. If you already have any scars, wounds, injuries, or rashes on your surface, then also you should avoid getting the temporary tattoos as they may cause some severe allergic reactions.
Cleaning is a very important part which you have to do before applying the temporary tattoo. You can use cleansing wipes or cotton pads to clean the surface. Don’t forget to shave your skin before the application to give your tattoo a neat and clean look.
Avoid using body creams, moisturizers, scrubs, and essential oils after the procedure so that the ink of your tattoo doesn’t get smudged.

Initially, I was skeptical about getting permanent tattoos due to the long duration hours of the process, the pain it causes, allergies, and going for the laser tattoo removal treatments in case I am not satisfied with the results. Since I was not fully prepared for any permanent commitment so I found temporary tattoos as a perfect solution for my urge. Temporary tattoos are perfect since they painless, inexpensive, and last for only a few days. Generally, there are numerous methods of getting temporary tattoos but my favorite one is by using the sharpie. In this article, I have explained several methods that you can follow to make your sharpie tattoo lasts for months.

Before beginning the process, you need to follow the following mentioned steps:

Choosing the spot: The most important step before beginning the process of getting the tattoo is to choose the right spot for getting the temporary tattoo. The area of your body which comes in regular contact with the soap and water should be avoided since it can fade the ink of the sharpie.
Shaving the spot: After choosing the best spot, the next important step is to shave the area well using a razor. It is done to give your tattoo a neat and clean look. If you don’t have the hair on the chosen spot, you can skip this step.
Cleaning the spot: Once you’re done with the shaving part, the final step to be followed is to clean the area well. Cleaning can be done by using rubbing alcohol on cotton pads or cleansing/wet wipes. This process is done to remove the extra oil and dirt from the surface of the skin. Avoid using the beauty products like a body moisturizers, creams, gels, natural oils, etc. for a few days since it can fade away the ink of the sharpie.

Baby Powder or Talcum Powder

It should be applied at the end from the distance of 10-12inches from the tattoo after the application of the baby powder. After its application, let it dry naturally so that the ink of the tattoo doesn’t get smudged.

Liquid Band-aid

In case you don’t have the hair spray at your place, you can use the liquid band-aid which can available easily at any nearby medical shop. After the application, let it dry naturally so that the ink doesn’t get smudged.

Transparent/Clear Nail Polish

Transparent nail polish also helps to stick the ink of the tattoo on the skin for a longer duration of time. Sometimes it also peels off after a few days so people usually avoid its application.

Petroleum Jelly or Balm

Petroleum jelly or balm can also be applied over the tattoo at the end so that it can seal the ink of the tattoo on the surface of the skin and also helps in repelling the water, thus increasing the longevity of the tattoo.

Following is the method which I have followed to make the sharpie tattoo that lasted for a month:

Selection of the design

Selection of the perfect design of the tattoo is very important. I went through several options online to select the best one according to my choice. I took the printout of the tattoos from the nearby shop and selected a tiny heart tattoo.

Use of the tracing paper

Along with the printouts, I bought sheets of tracing paper to trace the tattoo on my arm. The sheet was large so I cut it down according to the size of my tattoo.

Use the sharpie

After cutting the tracing paper, I used the black-inked sharpie to draw the tattoo. I placed the tracing paper on the tattoo and try to trace it using the sharpie.

Cleaning the area

Before the application of the tattoo, I cleaned the skin of my arm well using a cleansing wipe. You can also use a cotton pad for this purpose.

Apply the tracing paper

After the tracing process, I placed the tracing paper on my arm and pressed it for a few minutes (2-3minutes) so that the ink of the sharpie gets stick to my skin properly.

Peeling off the tracing paper

After a few minutes, I peeled off the tracing paper from my skin. I noticed that the traced image of the tattoo is being formed on my arm.

Drawing the tattoo

I drew over the traced image of the tattoo formed using the same sharpie which I used before.

Baby powder or talcum powder

After drawing the tattoo with the sharpie, I applied the baby powder over it so that the ink of the tattoo gets stick to the skin properly. In case you are allergic, you can also use cornflour instead of powder.

Re-drawing the tattoo

After the application of the baby powder, I again used the sharpie to re-draw the design. I did this step again so that the tattoo stays for a longer duration of time. Now again apply the baby powder.

Apply vaseline/petroleum jelly/balm

The last step to be followed is to apply petroleum jelly on the tattoo.

After completing the process, you need to take care of the following things:

Try to avoid using the beauty products like body moisturizers, creams, scrubs, and essential oils so that the ink of your tattoo doesn’t get smudge.
Avoid working out for a few days as sweat can fade away the ink of the tattoo.
Avoid wearing skin-fit clothes as they can also fade away the ink of the tattoo due to friction.
You can also use cornflour in case you don’t have the baby powder or talcum powder at your place.

Don’t worry if you don’t have the eyeliner at your place as you can borrow it from your friends or family. The waterproof eyeliner which you would be using can either be in a liquid form or pencil-based. In this article, I have explained several methods of getting temporary tattoos using eyeliner. Let’s read further to know the details of each method.

Before beginning the process, you need to take care of the following things:

The spot of your skin should be properly cleaned using a cotton pad or cleansing wipes.
Shaving of the skin should be done before beginning the process to give your tattoo a clean look.
The eyeliner should be waterproof irrespective of its brand and color.
If you’re allergic to cosmetics then avoid getting the temporary tattoos using the eyeliner.

Method 1. Using the eyeliner and baby powder

Requirements:

Waterproof Eyeliner
Baby Powder or Talcum Powder

Selection of the spot

When you are finished with the drawing part, apply the baby powder on the surface so that the tattoo’s ink stays for a longer duration of time on the spot. You can also use talcum powder or cornflour if you don’t have the baby powder at your place.

Method 2. Using the ball pen, eyeliner, and toothpaste

Requirements:

Ball Pen
Waterproof Eyeliner
Toothpaste
Baby Powder or Talcum Powder
Vaseline

Clean the spot

The area where you want to have the tattoo should be cleaned properly using a cotton pad or cleansing wipes. Make sure that your spot is properly shaved before the application so that your tattoo looks neat and clean. After the cleansing process, apply the toothpaste irrespective of its brand.

Massage the toothpaste

The next step is to massage the toothpaste on the spot properly. Now, use tissue paper to clean it off from the surface.

Use the ball pen

For drawing the tattoo, I used a black-inked ball pen.

Use the baby powder or talcum powder

After drawing the tattoo using the ball pen, I applied the baby powder to it.

Re-draw the design

Now use the waterproof eyeliner to re-draw the tattoo. I used the black-colored waterproof liquid eyeliner for this purpose. You can use pencil-based eyeliners of several colors to give your tattoo a unique look.

Apply the vaseline

The final step is to apply the vaseline to give your tattoo a neat and clean look.

Take care of the following things after the application of the tattoos:

If you ain’t happy with the results, you can clean off the tattoo anytime using the soap with cold water.
Use can also use a waterproof bandaid to be applied to your tattoo while taking the shower.
