William Heinesen in Space 🚀 In August 2023, a handmade Faroese tie journeyed into space. It travelled with astronaut Andreas Mogensen to the International Space Station as part of the Huginn mission. The tie is woven with Faroese wool and belonged to William Heinesen, the great Faroese artist who depicted life on the Faroe Islands through poetry, novels, paintings, and colourful papercuts. “I am honoured to have a piece of Faroese history with me. While it may look small in size, the stories that this tie could tell must be great,” said Andreas about having the tie with him on his mission. The tie was among the few objects brought on the mission from Greenland, Denmark, and the Faroe Islands. The film was made in cooperation with Elisa Heinesen, granddaughter of the artist, who initiated this collaboration with Visit Faroe Islands. "William Heinesen has had a tremendous impact on Faroese art and culture, and we saw this as a great opportunity to shed light on his works and legacy. Telling these smaller stories is an important aspect of our work. The fact that his books have been translated into more than 25 languages attests to his international relevance," says Guðrið Højgaard, CEO at Visit Faroe Islands. In the short film Elisa Heinesen, granddaughter of the artist, reflects on how William Heinesen would have reacted, had he known that his tie made it to space. At the end of this film, we get a glimpse of the tie as it floats around the International Space Station. 📽 Polarfilms #Huginn #FaroeIslands #WilliamHeinesen #visitfaroeislands

We made sports history today! 💪 26:26 against the Handball ´giants´ from Norway. 😍 It was a draw, but it feels like victory. What a thrilling handball match, settled in the last second of the match at the European Handball Championship, held in Berlin, Germany, where over 5.000, or close to 10% of the whole Faroese population, have traveled in order to support our young lads 😍 #ehfeuro2024 #visitfaroeislands #faroeislands #handball #ehfeuro #norway #visitnorway #drawvictory

HOME: New tourism strategy towards 2030 unveiled. The Faroe Islands is more than a destination – it is home. This is an adaptation of a famous quote by poet and environmental activist Gary Snyder. It reflects an almost self-evident, yet sometimes forgotten truth: the Faroe Islands are home to people living and working here, as well as to plants and wildlife which have made it their habitat. The new strategy is setting out the direction of travel and our goals for Faroese tourism over the coming years. It’s the result of hundreds of conversations and meetings, and masses of inspiration from our international colleagues. A so-called ‘bottom-up’ strategy was applied, the first of its kind to be done in the tourism sector. For many years, our remoteness has been our main attraction for visitors, and tourism has been growing at a steady rate and now forms a significant part of the Faroe Islands. With the growth of tourism came a new perspective of opportunities and has provided boasting world-class experiences, accommodation, and cuisine. However simultaneously came a sense that with an unregulated tourism sector, we must ensure we do not lose some of the self-determination, natural splendour and distinctive identity that are among the defining traits of our home. The Faroe Islands are home to us. We have, quite literally, opened our homes to the rest of the world. Therefore, as we strive for development, it pays to never forget who and where we are, or, indeed, never to turn the Faroe Islands into somewhere quickly consumed and immediately forgotten. So the key question remains: What kind of tourism do we want and how should it contribute to Faroese society?
