Children have the right to be protected from violence and exploitation and have the opportunity to reach their full potential. UNICEF, in partnership with the Solomon Islands Ministry of Health & Medical Services and Hope Trust and with support from the Spotlight Initiative conducted a rapid assessment on the situation of children working and living on the streets in Solomon Islands. The assessment highlights the urgent need for focused child protection efforts, particularly in advocacy, legal review, and awareness campaigns to address such issues effectively. Dance, chants, songs, weaving and story-telling – education the Pacific way! The national and state education agencies in the Federated States of Micronesia are designing a new programme on mainstreaming, strengthening and resourcing indigenous knowledge in classroom learning. The government of FSM’s vision for this work is to increase the engagement of young people in learning, improve outcomes and build identity and resilience. UNICEF is proud to partner with the Institute of Education - USP in support of this new programme, with funding from Global Partnership for Education.

Violence against children is a critical issue for human capital and economic development. It impacts on children’s schooling, their mental and physical health and their work performance as adults. UNICEF is supporting the Solomon Islands Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs, and the Ministry of Health and Medical Services to undertake a study on the economic cost of violence against children. The findings from this study will contribute towards evidence-based investments for child protection interventions in Solomon Islands.

Early Childhood Development (ECD) is crucial for climate adaptation, resilience, and sustainable development. The Government of the Republic of the Marshall Islands convened a high-level dialogue between Climate Change and ECD experts and held an ECD Policy Retreat. As part of the retreat, the National ECD Action Plan was updated, including a strategic priority on building climate resilience through ECD. UNICEF is proud to support the Government of RMI in this effort, in collaboration with The World Bank
