Nokia has launched several of its new innovations in Midsummer Launch in Finland couple of weeks ago. We have announced two new two compact, next-generation outdoor #Airscale baseband products with 4G-5G and 2G-3G-4G-5G options. These baseband products will support twice as much cell capacity and enhance uplink throughput by up to 30 percent while reducing power consumption by up to 40 percent compared to existing basebands we have. On #Airscale radio portfolio, we have added a new high-performance #Habrok 32 Massive MIMO radio that supports an instantaneous bandwidth of 200MHz. This will enable operators to choose the ideal Massive MIMO solution that best fits their available spectrum assets and deployment needs. We have also launched #Kolibri and all-in-One 5G small cell for indoor and outdoor use cases. #Kolibri products don’t need a separate baseband unit, which enables simplified installations and deployment flexibility. Every year we used to publish quarterly analysis about smartphone market in Western Europe. And this year, I thought it would be interesting to look at just 5G-enabled smartphones, with a special focus on smartphone shipments in the commercial segment.  The TowerXchange Meetup Europe 2024 took place this week and confirmed the importance for #TowerCos of efficiency combined with innovation. Their stelar asset management, hosting multiple tenants, is critical to expand and leverage the activity on new kind of assets like a #smartlamppost. Smartlampposts gather 2 important advantages - location and energy availability, and match #TowerCos ambition to expand into new lines of business. We have been developing with various TowerCos and partners robust use cases where a #smartlamppost hosts #5G #SmallCells, #mmW mesh solutions, #EV charging. At the same time, we are also working on various projects that reinvent a smartlamppost to become a RSU (Road Side Unit) that can host the upcoming connectivity services for future connected and automated vehicles, like edge computing, computer vision cameras and other sensorization and energy autonomous units.

🌲 A recent milestone in an ongoing project co-funded by Vinnova and the programme for Advanced Digitalization has brought about remarkable progress. In a successful test conducted in a forest outside Västerås, central Sweden, a drone operating as a mobile 5G base station was used to remotely control a forestry machine. This significant achievement was made possible through the collaborative efforts of partners including Mittuniversitetet, Telia, Ericsson, Skogforsk, SCA, Volvo CE, and Biometria. In November 2021, the project group marked a significant breakthrough by remotely controlling a timber loader at SCA’s Torsboda terminal in northern Sweden. Building on this success, the team set their sights on utilizing a drone equipped with a portable mobile base station to extend 5G network coverage, a goal they successfully realized. 📶 During the test, the drone, positioned approximately 500m from the forestry machine, established a coverage area reaching up to 3km. Notably, the driver of the forestry machine operated from Skogforsk’s remote control lab in Uppsala, a distance of roughly 80km! The project's focus on leveraging drone technology and 5G to enable remote-controlled vehicles in Sweden's remote areas is truly pioneering. Researchers at Mittuniversitetet are diligently studying data communication latency and reliability, crucial factors in remotely controlling machinery. This week we had the honor to welcome German Chancellor Olaf Scholz together with the Prime Ministers of the 5 Nordic Countries Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland to our Ericsson Headquarters in Stockholm. Accompanied by the Swedish and German Ambassadors and the delegation of the Chancellery, the day was packed with intense discussions on Digitalization of Europe and the Deployment of 5G.   The joint statement of the Nordic Council says: “Like-minded nations need to step up and accelerate the adoption of these critical and emerging technologies.”   Instead of prioritizing regulation over innovation, Europe should fully embrace digitalization through regulatory support for digital infrastructure and an economic environment that encourages innovators, entrepreneurial risk-takers and investors. 05 Jul 2024 — Purchase price for Vonage back in November 2021: US$6.2 billion. Total amount written down to-date: approximately US$4 billion (roughly two thirds of the original sum forked out for Vonage). I think this says it all. I wrote about this acquisition on 23rd Nov 2021. Those interested can revisit it here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gkwhdXzs. It would appear that my scepticism back then was justified. In my opinion, part of the problem lies with the lacklustre performance for 5G (app developers are not wildly excited over it) and lack of experience with app developer communities. It was never going to be easy for hardware companies to pivot to software. It's an entirely different business (from both a cultural and business model aspect). This also serves as a cautionary tale on hubris. Strategy (assuming it is correct) is one thing, execution is another thing altogether. There are market readiness and technology codependence to factor in as well. Ericsson has tie-ups with telcos, but many of them are not adept at selling software-based products. This is another challenge!

From deepfake videos to voice forgery, the boundaries are shifting, and ethical considerations are more crucial than ever. A recent survey conducted by YouGov in Norway revealed that approximately half of the respondents are worried about AI-generated nude photos. Together with Ana Brodtkorb, I address this issue in today's Nettavisen (see link in comments). The article is written in Norwegian, but here are four key points to note: 🔑 Deepfake technology can create convincing videos with just one image. 🔑 The digital divide between generations affects awareness of AI risks. 🔑 Voice forgery poses security challenges. 🔑 Regulations need an update to keep pace with technological advancements. EUWENA and its members at Private Networks Forum May 28th saw the RCRwireless initiated online webinar on private networks; the Private Networks Forum. This year’s edition saw no less than 5 presenters and presentations from EUWENA and its members! There were -         2 suppliers that are EUWENA members: Druid and IBwave -         2 end users that are EUWENA members: EDF and Schiphol Amsterdam airport -         EUWENA herself through the secretary doing a panel on mainports and private cellular The entire webinar was very pinpointed and specific and covered all aspects of private wireless networks; from Neutral Hosting to Assured Quality and from end user cases to perceived value add. For anyone in the eco system or about to embark on a private wireless implementation, there’s good insights to be had from individual sessions. Also, the role of the SI and the simplification for usage by less – or not at all – cellular savvy end users were explored. Member EDF elaborated on the use of private 4G in its power stations, both thermal and nuclear and its windfarm. EDF explains how it employs the bands 2.6 Ghz and 3.8-4.2 Ghz, both of which are available in France yet under differing regimes. EUWENA secretary Koen Mioulet and member Schiphol, Willem Blom, ran a session of the requirements of mainports and the desire to harmonise spectrum and standardise deployments in order to scale projects across countries and assets. Schiphol elaborated how it intends to run a full scale 5G network for all its operational processes (yet already has a 4G trunking replacement network and a 5G PoC)

Attending the #WWRFHuddle in @fraunhoferfokus in Berlin Germany The 6G vision is starting to take shape, following a huge investment of time, research and money from numerous organisations all over the world. The release of the ITU Recommendation Framework for IMT-2030 has provided a big step forward in helping to identify the key drivers, design principles and usage scenarios that are going to be fundamental in creating the 6G vision. What is emerging is a vision of near-instant and ubiquitous connectivity that not only transforms how the human, physical, and digital worlds interact, but also delivers positive environmental and social change. As work now begins towards the implementations of this vision and framework, WWRF’s Huddle will once again provide a collaborative platform to bring together leading policymakers, connectivity and service providers, researchers and other key stakeholders from around the world to discuss the work that lies ahead. Each of these can function both as a transmitter for mobile connectivity and as a rain gauge.   With this microwave data, @3 Sverige and @Ericsson enable @SMHI (Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute) to create a real-time map showing how much it rains in different places, something that is not currently possible with traditional weather radar systems. Meet Tarik Cicic, Senior Research Scientist at CRNA - Centre for Resilient Networks and Applications. He’s been part of Simula Metropolitan Center for Digital Engineering since 2022 and is leading the important work of measuring the availability and performance of mobile networks in Norway. His journey from a programming-fascinated teenager to a senior researcher in network resilience showcases a career driven by technological curiosity and real-world impact. The following is an excerpt from the full interview: https://lnkd.in/dFWft-yR 📚 What is your educational background, and how did you become interested in your field? When I was a 13-year-old, I was an ardent reader of the popular science magazine Galaksija, in my home country, which at the time was still known as Yugoslavia. On the last page of the magazine, they started publishing short, introductory texts and code snippets on computers and programming. I remember how I stared at a piece of code written in the programming language “Basic” and could not understand how it worked (it took an integer as input and printed its prime factors as output). I was captivated and did not give up until I got it, which took time without access to an actual computer. My educational direction was thereby decided. I joined the University of Oslo in 1994, at the time when the first big wave of internet communications and WWW splashed over the world. It was truly fascinating, with endless possibilities and many open questions, which inspired me to do my PhD there. After finishing my PhD, I worked in research as well as industry. 🌐 What are your current research projects or areas of focus in your field? In CRNA we do multiple projects in the fields of IoT, 5G, security, privacy, and network management and operations. Like so many other research fields, data communications have noticed the transformative effect of recent advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence. With my background as a practitioner in network planning and operations, I am particularly interested in how AI can be applied to increase the operational stability of large IP networks. Right now, we are exploring the applications of Large Language Models in network configurations. A survey of 100 industry managers in the manufacturing, mining and forest industries found that more than 50% of digitalization initiatives in Sweden are still in the planning and pilot stages. Despite facing prolonged innovation cycles, business leaders tell us they are right on the threshold of scaling up. NorthStar 5G Innovation program by Telia and Ericsson provides the extra push to help companies go from proof of concept to market-ready solutions. Typically, the process of deploying new functionality in public networks is a lengthy process, involving integration with many other network and IT elements. #Robocalling #telco #Fraud #Spam #Spoofing After having enjoyed more than one year of almost zero nuisance calls on my German landline phone, since two weeks I get almost 10-15 of such calls per day. And it is not just me: Googling the phone numbers which tried calling me, I found out that many consumers are suffering getting daily calls from these numbers.
