Luca Tuchtefeld's internship with Grexel has now come to an end. It's been great 2 months filled with productive work and learning!   💡🌍Here's what Luca has to say about his experience at Grexel:   "During the past two months, I had an amazing chance to work as an Energy Certification Trainee at Grexel. My main task was preparing this year's residual mix calculation and automating the calculation model. I was also introduced to Grexel's state-of-the-art registry solution for energy certificates, which broadened my overall understanding of GO markets. I am very thankful for this opportunity, as I was able to deepen my knowledge of European energy markets, experience new cultures, and further expand my experiences within the EEX Group."   Thanks, Luca, it was a pleasure working with you! 🙌😊

💡 Myth Buster Alert: Residual Mix Calculation Myth 6 💡 Ever heard that the residual mix calculation of a certain year only considers transactions of Guarantee of Origin (GOs) relating to the production year of that same year? Let's set the record straight! 🚫 Not true: While this is a common misconception, it's important to understand why it doesn't hold up. Picture this: On March 31, 2024, many GOs from the production year 2023 remain uncanceled, and some may not even be issued yet. If we limit the calculation to GOs from the reference production year, a significant number of transactions would be overlooked (as next year, the reference year would be 2024, ignoring 2023 GOs). 🔄 Therefore, the transaction data collected—issuing, cancellations, and expiries—is purely transaction time-based. All transactions between April 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024, are considered, regardless of the production year associated with the GOs. 📊 Another reason for focusing on transaction time is the reliability of data across Europe. Transaction time-based statistics tend to be more consistent and compatible across all countries involved in the calculation. 🔗 Some countries do tie the production year of GOs to the year they're applicable for disclosure. For instance, for 2023 consumption, only 2023 production year GOs may be used. However, to ensure a methodology that works for all countries, transaction time remains the primary consideration. #RenewableEnergy #ResidualMix #FactCheck

❗ Residual mixes for 2023 are out! We had the pleasure and honor to carry out this important calculation again this year for 2023. Residual mixes are key in ensuring that energy attributes tracked with guarantees of origin are not double counted in energy origin disclosure to consumers.   💡 Some highlights of the results: - On average, the renewable share of the residual mixes of European countries was 13,5% which is a drop of 1,2% points from last year). - The European Attribute Mix was more fossil and carbon intensive than ever! - The EAM is used to cover attribute deficits in countries where GO net exports exceed physical power net exports. - In 5 countries the renewable share of the residual mix dropped by 10% points or more. - Issuances exceeded cancellations and expiries by 200 TWh, which means that a significant amount of 2023 production GOs were still active on 1.4.2024. 🌟 Read more about Residual Mixes for 2023 published by the AIB - Association of Issuing Bodies here: https://lnkd.in/d9yUWE9 #residualmix #guaranteesoforigin #emissionfactors

⚠ AIB has published the #ResidualMixes and European Attribute Mix for the calendar year of 2023. 💡 These figures represent the part of electricity supply in Europe that is not tracked with guarantees of origin and therefore guaranteeing the accuracy and reliability of the GO system. The calculation was carried out by Grexel on behalf of AIB. 🔅 Similar to 2022, in 2023 the total electricity production decreased by 92 TWh in the calculation area (91 TWh decrease in 2022 from 2021). This was mainly driven by the sharp decline in fossil production by 245 TWh from 2022. Nuclear production remained fairly unchanged, while renewables rose by 149 TWh compared to 2022. The evolution was much more positive in 2023 than in 2022, when there was an increase in fossil production and no growth in renewables compared to 2021. ✴ All information on this link: https://lnkd.in/d9yUWE9

✈ Earlier last week, our CEO, Markus Klimscheffskij, visited our long-term partners at EMS Serbia. Markus Klimscheffskij shares his enthusiasm about our ongoing collaboration: "EMS is a great example of our long-term partnerships. We started our collaboration in 2011 with a consultancy on GO and disclosure implementation. In 2016 we launched the Serbian GO registry in CMO.grexel, predecessor of G-REX. Most recently in 2023 we migrated the registry into G-REX. I had the pleasure to visit EMS offices again in May 2024 and it was so nice to see familiar and new faces with which our cooperation is always a pleasure". 🤝 Grexel is looking forward to achieving more great things together. #grexel #renewableenergy #partnership

🌟 Myth Buster Alert: Residual Mix Calculation Myth 4 🌟 Ever wondered if the residual mix published by AIB - Association of Issuing Bodies is exactly the same as the official residual mix of a country? Let's break it down! 🔍 Partly true: In most cases, the methodology aligns with the AIB Shifted Issuance Based Residual Mix Calculation Methodology. Differences, if any, are usually negligible. Many countries even rely entirely on AIB's published mixes, which is a testament to their reliability. After all, AIB bases its calculations on data reported by competent bodies. 💡 However, here's the twist: Some countries might have their own methodologies due to legal or other reasons. For instance, they may exclude all renewable energy from the production mix to derive the residual mix. 🔒 To stay legally compliant and ensure accurate disclosure, it's crucial to cross-check national practices and figures published by the competent body. #RenewableEnergy #ResidualMix #FactCheck

💡 Myth Buster Alert: Residual Mix Calculation Myth 3 💡 Ever heard that the residual mix for a specific year (let's say, Year 2023) is only applied to disclosure in July of the following year (Year 2024) because it takes six months to calculate it? Let's uncover the truth behind this! 🕰️ Partly true: While there is indeed a time lag in applying the residual mix to disclosure, the primary reason stems from the disclosure deadline of March 31. Transactions relevant to disclosure Year 2023 extend until March 31 of Year 2024, meaning data collection for the residual mix can only begin in April of Year 2024.  📊 Once data collection starts in early April 2024, Competent Bodies need adequate time to compile the necessary data. Additionally, AIB must gather Guarantee of Origin (GO) statistics covering Q1 of Year 2024. 📅 By early May 2024, we compile the preliminary results of the residual mixes, which are then circulated across European Competent Bodies. These bodies have 1-2 weeks to address any conflicts with their national results. Consequently, the final residual mixes can be published by the end of May 2024. 🔄 But wait, there's more! Electricity suppliers also need time to apply the new residual mixes to their bills and promotional materials. Typically, they're given a 1–2-month leeway from the publication of results. Hence, the residual mix is updated in disclosure statements of suppliers more than half a year after the end of the reference year. 💡 Myth Buster Alert: Residual Mix Calculation Myth 2 💡 Think it's impossible to know which greenhouse gases and lifecycle emissions are included in the residual mix CO2? Let's shed light on this misconception! 🚫 Not true: The input factors sourced from Ecoinvent specifically account for direct CO2 emissions, excluding other greenhouse gas emissions and lifecycle emissions from the final residual mix CO2 emissions. While Competent Bodies may occasionally report input CO2 factors for residual mixes, the scope typically remains the same: only direct (not full life-cycle) and only CO2 emissions are considered. 🔄 Transmission and distribution losses are categorized as consumption in the calculation process. Consequently, the residual mix does not encompass emissions from these losses. Essentially, these losses, like any other consumption, can either be greened with Guarantee of Origin (GOs) or have the origin of the residual mix.
