Parenting Education Programs
In addition to Nurturing Programs, FNC offers other opportunities for parents to build their skills as their child’s nurturer and first teacher and improve parent-child relationships and communication.
At different times and in different neighborhoods, we provide parenting education that supplements what facilitators teach and demonstrate in Playgroups to help develop children’s school readiness. Staff and Parent Partners have been trained in a variety of curricula and lead multi-session programs covering several early childhood topics:
- Boston Basics – parenting and caregiving from birth to age 3
- Seven Skills for School Success – social-emotional and executive functioning skills
- Raising a Reader – early literacy practices
- Read and Rise – early literacy practices
These programs will be advertised when available and promoted within the neighborhood where they will be offered. Nurturing childcare is provided while parents are learning.
The Cape Verdean Nurturing Circle is offered 2-3 times per year in our Dorchester location. It provides a safe, supportive environment to share feelings and receive support from others in similar situations while discussing a variety of topics related to child-rearing and family relationships. Parents seeking extra support as they face parenting challenges with children of any age may seek out or be referred to Breakthrough Parenting, which is offered 2-3 times per year in our Dorchester location.
The Breakthrough Parenting Program moves a family from struggle to cooperation by taking a comprehensive approach that goes beyond the teaching of techniques. It provides a clear understanding of child-rearing and human relationships to increase positive parent-child interactions and effective discipline in the home. Mind Matters is a ten-week program, offered in our Allston-Brighton location through collaboration with the Harvard Ed portal. Parents learn to apply cutting-edge research on how brains develop to help their children succeed in school and at home. Child care is offered so that parents can learn uninterrupted.
