Forest dwelling reptiles are widely distributed but seldom seen. Their important and diverse roles in ecosystems and their physical adaptations are fascinating to learn about.

Forest dwelling snakes and turtles are reptiles with many unique features. They both have scaley covers and (shell) protected eggs, and they are both ectotherms - obtaining heat from sources outside of their bodies. They also both go through the process of brumation by slowing down their metabolisms to spend the winter months in warm hidden locations. But which of these organisms have their hips within their ribcage? And can some of them really extract oxygen from water using a process called cloacal respiration? This video answers these questions and more.
