ALP 304: Scaling A Small Business

What does it take to scale a startup in a digital-first world? In Scaling a Small Business, student teams will be partnered with entrepreneurs from underrepresented backgrounds to help scale their businesses. Teams will focus specifically on digital customer acquisition and will work with founders, domain experts, and industry professionals to develop strategies for growth. The course focuses on developing entrepreneurial skills in marketing and strategy - using platforms like Google, Facebook, Instagram, Shopify, Etsy, Amazon and others - and then applying those skills to real companies looking to scale while also building equity in the startup ecosystem by supporting Black and brown founders.Through hands-on, project based work, students will work directly with founders as consultants, coaches, and advisors, and each team will be equipped with resources to experiment with and implement some of the aspects of their scaling plans over the course of the quarter. This course is ideal for students who want to explore entrepreneurship - either through starting their own venture, joining a growing venture, or acquiring a venture - or are motivated to help companies owned by Black and brown founders grow. The course will be organized as an Action Learning Project (ALP) course, and will have a cadence of in-class meetings, meetings with the clients (founders), and individual meetings with faculty members. In this intensive project-based course, you will learn research-validated foundations, tools, and practices; apply these tools and learnings to a real project for an external organization; create value for the organization by providing insights and deliverables; and be an ambassador to the organization by exposing them to the talent, values, and expertise of the GSB. You will also have the opportunity to gain practical industry experience and exposure to the organization, its industry, and the space in which it operates; build relationships in the organization and industry; and gain an understanding of related career paths.
