As Ellen DeGeneres bid farewell to her namesake talk show on Thursday after 19 seasons, she turned to Jennifer Aniston for advice.
Aniston, after all, was the very first guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and she also knows what it's like to say goodbye to a massively popular TV show: In 2004, she closed the purple door on playing Rachel Green after 10 years of Friends. As it turns out, she closed a few more doors on the way out.
"Well, I got a divorce and went into therapy," Aniston said, laughing, of how she dealt with the end of Friends. "Then I did a movie called The Breakup. I just kind of leaned into the end. I was like, 'You know what, guys? Let's just make this a completely new chapter. Let's end everything and start new.'"
Aniston and Brad Pitt famously announced their divorce in January 2005, after nearly five years of marriage.
"It worked great," Aniston said with a deep sigh.
Since Aniston's inaugural Ellen appearance back in 2003, the Morning Show star returned 19 times, for which she joked, "You're welcome."
She and DeGeneres also looked back on their questionable '03 outfits and their important conversation about whether toilet paper should be installed to roll out under or over. And to parallel the welcome mat Aniston brought for that fateful first show, she left DeGeneres with a "Thanks for the Memories" mat.
"I am actually taking that home today," DeGeneres promised, after Aniston accused her of getting rid of the welcome mat. "I don't know where the welcome mat went."
