Killing Eve renewed for season 3, brings in new showrunner

It seems that Eve and Villanelle will live to see another day. Or another season.

BBC America announced on Monday — the day after season 2 premiered — that it has renewed Killing Eve for a third season.

Based on Luke Jennings’ book Codename Villanelle, the cunning, subversive spy thriller centers on off-the-books MI6 intelligence officer Eve (Sandra Oh), who is tracking an international assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer). The two are engaged in a charged and obsessive cat-and-mouse game that ended in the season 1 finale with Eve stabbing Villanelle but Villanelle escaping. Season 2, which is being simulcast on AMC, began with Villanelle making her way back to England, where Eve is reeling from the traumatic event, and is rehired by her mysterious MI6 boss Carolyn (Fiona Shaw).

For the third time in three years, Eve will have a new head writer. Phoebe Waller-Bridge oversaw the show in season 1, while Emerald Fennell handled season 2. British writer Suzanne Heathcote (Fear the Walking Dead) will serve as head writer and executive producer for season 3.

“We love having this show and the brilliant Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer and Fiona Shaw on our networks,” Sarah Barnett, President, Entertainment Networks for AMC Networks said in a statement. “Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Emerald Fennell have delivered two addictively entertaining seasons. As we did last year, we’re renewing Killing Eve right out of the gate, now with Suzanne Heathcote as lead writer, as a sign of confidence – we adore this show as much as our fans do. Killing Eve doesn’t do anything in a templated way; we love giving opportunity to three genius women to make their mark.”

The critically adored show grew each week in the ratings during season 1 — the finale netted 1.25 millions in live+3 — and earned an Emmy nomination as well as trophies at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild for Oh.
