Amazon's The Boys teaser shows the dark side of superheroes

In the age of peak comic book movie content, the world could use The Boys.

The new teaser from Amazon, coming directly from showrunner Eric Kripke on social media, flashes through the seedy underbelly of the superhero world and the group of blue-collar berserkers who try to keep them in check.

Based on the Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson edgy comic series, The Boys is the latest television adaptation from producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg after AMC's Preacher. In this world, The Seven are the equivalent of the Justice League or The Avengers, except their public image of heroics and benevolence is all for show. These heroes are using their powers to kill, pillage, and bully behind the scenes for the betterment of themselves.

That's where The Boys (including its solo woman) come in.

The new footage gives a taste of the NSFW efforts from Karl Urban's Billy Butcher, Jack Quaid's "Wee" Hughie, Karen Fukuhara's The Female, Laz Alsono's Mother's Milk, and Tomer Capon's Frenchie to make sure The Seven aren't stepping on the little guys in their pursuit of glory.

Based on the video, shown above, you can see why Kripke told us The Boys will be "wildly, schizophrenically different" from that other show he's known for, Supernatural.

"I want it to be graphic when it needs to be because that's what's best for the story, but I want to tell this character story about these regular, blue-collar humans taking on these entitled, super-powered, one-percenter gods and the relationships amongst them," he told EW.

Simon Pegg, whose likeness was used by Robertson to draw the character of Hughie in the comics, will feature in the series as Hughie Sr. Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Chace Crawford, and Elisabeth Shue also star.

A specific release date is still TBD, but The Boys will debut on Amazon this summer.
