Wayward Sisters: CW boss explains why they passed on Supernatural spin-off

Upfronts season has been filled with cancellations, but there was one show that Supernatural fans were particularly bummed about: The CW decided not to move forward with Wayward Sisters. Wayward was the potential Supernatural spin-off focused around Jody Mills, Claire Novak, and their family of monster-hunting women in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The backdoor pilot for Wayward, which aired in January, was well-received by the fandom, and when the CW announced its decision to pass on the series pickup, fans and Supernatural stars alike took to social media to share their thoughts.

Rather quickly a fan created a petition to save the show, which has more than 70,000 signatures as of Thursday. And now, CW president Mark Pedowitz is offering an explanation behind the decision. “We had really great material this year. We’re really excited about the five series we did pickup,” Pedowitz told reporters ahead of the network’s upfront presentation Thursday. “We are big fans of the characters and the women who played those characters in the series, but we did not feel creatively that the show is where we wanted it to be, and we felt we had a better shot with Legacies.”

Legacies is the Originals spin-off that will air on Thursday nights after Supernatural.
