Room 104: The Duplass brothers expose their 'inner weirdos' in new trailer

If the latest trailer for Room 104 is any indication, HBO's upcoming anthology series is like nothing you've ever seen from brothers Mark and Jay Duplass. EW can exclusively reveal the brand-new footage and poster for a show that has talk of time travel, James Van Der Beek dancing around in a cummerbund, two Mormon boys watching a brow-raising sign from God, a dead guy, and so much more.

"This show is different in tone and feel from anything we've ever made," Mark, who co-created and executive-produces Room 104 with his brother, tells EW in an email. "Excited (and slightly terrified) to expose our inner weirdos to the world."

The concept is perfect for a mind-trippy bacchanal: All 12 episodes take place in the same motel room — room 104 of a typical American chain motel — but each week highlights a different story, tone, and era. Mark wrote the first episode, titled "Ralphie," wherein Melonie Diaz (The Belko Experiment) plays a babysitter who has to look after that creepy kid spotted in the trailer.

Other "mini-movies" (as the episodes are described) glimpsed in the footage involve a cult priest (American Gods' Orlando Jones) promising a woman ascension to another realm, a housekeeper (Sons of Anarchy's Dendrie Taylor) reconnecting with her younger self (Flesh and Bone's Sarah Hay), and the sole survivor of a 1969 plane crash (Transparent's Amy Landecker) deciding whether to return to her life or start anew.

Nat Wolff (Paper Towns), Poorna Jagannathan (The Night Of), Mae Whitman (Parenthood), and Karan Soni (Deadpool) are among the cast, while the roster of directors also boasts impressive talents: Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the duo hired for Captain Marvel with Brie Larson, helmed the tenth episode, "Red Tent"; Doug Emmett, the cinematographer for The Edge of Seventeen, got behind the camera for the fifth episode, "Internet"; and Sarah Adina Smith of Buster's Mal Heart directed the first and third episodes.

Room 104 premieres Friday, July 28 at 11:30 p.m. ET on HBO.
