Moana star Auli'i Cravalho cast in Jason Katims NBC pilot Drama High

Less than 24 hours after her stunning performance at the Oscars, Moana‘s Auli’i Cravalho has been tapped to star in Jason Katims’ NBC pilot Drama High, EW has confirmed.

Based on the book of the same name from Michael Sokolove and the life of its subject, Lou Volpe, Drama High goes inside the high school drama department in a working-class town. Led by an impassioned teacher, the students and their performances electrify their area.

Sixteen-year-old Cravalho, who voiced the title character in Disney’s Oscar-nominated animated feature, will play one of the students, Lilette. (Deadline first reported the casting.) Here’s the character description: “Lilette works part-time after school at the local town diner. She is so much more than Vanessa, her single mother, thinks she is. Lilette has big dreams, and joining the drama department is one of them.”

Parenthood and Friday Night Lights‘ Katims will write and executive produce with Hamilton producer Jeffrey Seller, Michelle Lee and Flody Suarez. The Hamilton connection runs deep for Cravalho as Lin-Manual Miranda wrote the Oscar-nominated song How Far I’ll Go for Moana.
