Watch: Mary Tyler Moore talks penis protests in SNL monologue

In the wake of Mary Tyler Moore’s tragic passing, we’ve decided to look back on the hilarious monologue she gave when she hosted Saturday Night Live in March 1989.

The TV icon took the stage and addressed a recent controversy surrounding the show. “A group representing the American family” was calling on people to boycott SNL because the word “penis” was used 28 times in a recent sketch featuring Matthew Broderick.

“It’s a little awkward for me because, throughout my career, I’ve been associated with the best in family entertainment,” said Moore. “But I’m from the school of show business that says when you give your word you’ll do something, you do it.”

Then, she got distracted thinking about that aforementioned sketch: “Twenty-eight times… I mean, how can you say?… Well, I’m sure they had their reasons. I guess I just don’t get political satire.”

She proceeds to guarantee that said bad word would not be used that night. But, you’ll have to watch the entire monologue below to see if she manages to keep that promise:
