Ellen DeGeneres remembers Mary Tyler Moore: She 'changed the world for all women'

Ellen DeGeneres, who followed in Mary Tyler Moore’s footsteps and starred in a self-titled sitcom of her own, remembered the iconic actress Wednesday after learning of her death at the age of 80, tweeting:

Moore certainly “changed the world” for DeGeneres, who welcomed the beloved sitcom star often onto her own shows. Moore appeared as herself twice on Ellen, DeGeneres’ 1990s sitcom, once on The Ellen Show, DeGeneres’ short-lived follow-up, and finally, in 2004, stopped by DeGeneres’ talk show as a guest.

DeGeneres also visited Minneapolis in 2011 and stopped by the statue of Moore’s The Mary Tyler Moore Show character Mary Richards alongside the city’s then-Mayor R.T. Rybak to pay her respects. “I’m going to go to the statue where Mary Tyler Moore threw her hat,” she told the city’s Star Tribune at the time before her trip. “I’m going to try to find the hat.” She didn’t, but did draw an appreciative crowd.
