Mandy Patinkin will make Broadway return as Pierre in Great Comet

Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 has been reeling in music stars since its conception, casting Josh Groban and singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson, and now the show has tapped theater legend and Tony winner Mandy Patinkin in the titular role of Pierre.

The Homeland star will take over the role, originated by Groban, from Hamilton vet Okieriete Onaodowan to play a limited run from Aug. 15 to Sept. 3.

Patinkin will play opposite Denée Benton’s Natasha in the musical, which presents a small slice of War and Peace and was nominated for 12 Tonys. This will mark his long-awaited return to the Great White Way and his first Broadway musical since The Wild Party in 2000, a performance that garnered him a Tony nomination.

“Mandy Patinkin is a titan of musical theatre. He has given us some of the most unforgettable performances in Broadway history and created some of the most iconic leading roles ever written for musical theater,” producer Howard Kagan said in a statement. “So it’s an incredible honor that Mandy said yes to the idea of making his return to Broadway as Pierre in The Great Comet.”

Onaodowan and Michaelson will play their last performances as Pierre and Sonya on Aug. 13.
