While attending an awards show might not seem like one of the most terrifying propositions in the entertainment world, the Oscars can be an intimidating event. Fortunately for the 19 actors and actresses nominated for Academy Awards in 2020, all but two of them have attended the big show before this Sunday’s ceremony in an honored slot. Presenters, nominees, winners, and the one nominee who first learned how awards shows worked while attending with their own nominated mother. See how they all made their Oscars debut ahead.
Charlize Theron, 2000
![Charlize Theron](https://ew.com/thmb/Hq2Ptj_Ag7Aqyxs_rSmF46Ww3f0=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/14-charlize-theron-1-2000-6e54f541e0af4bd9a6b95f67bd2f791e.jpg)
Charlize Theron was reunited with her The Devil’s Advocate co-star Keanu Reeves when they presented the award for Best Original Score at the 2000 Academy Awards. Since then Theron has become an Oscars regular, with Bombshell marking her third nomination for Best Actress. She previously has won the award for Monster and was nominated for North Country.
Leonardo DiCaprio, 1994
![1994 Vanity Fair Post Academy Awards Party](https://ew.com/thmb/xzxhIFWmRT1_7gHnil3Q0nU5SYs=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/shutterstock_editorial_4372185q-2000-09793537799f44fda09178ce1d14e036.jpg)
It was apparent to the cast and crew of What's Eating Gilbert Grape that despite Leonardo DiCaprio's young age — he turned 18 while filming — they were watching a new talent coming into his own. Oscar voters agreed, and while Grape might not have been a huge box office success, the Academy recognized his performance with a Best Supporting Actor nomination in 1994. His nomination for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is DiCaprio's fifth nomination for Best Actor by the Academy, winning the award for The Revenant in 2016.
Scarlett Johansson, 2004
![Scarlett Johansson](https://ew.com/thmb/35669l0qmcLR3OzzVpDasMcI0z8=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/12-scarlett-johansson-1-2000-4931e56f1205481683841f7c15082e08.jpg)
With Lost in Translation up for four Academy Awards in 2004, Scarlett Johansson made her Oscar red carpet debut in support of nominations for the filmmaker Sofia Coppola and co-star Bill Murray. While she may not have been nominated that night, Johansson goes into the 2020 Academy Awards with two nominations; Best Actress for Marriage Story and Best Supporting Actress for Jojo Rabbit.
Al Pacino, 1974
![46th Academy Awards](https://ew.com/thmb/8uqMlR0vy-jIM9OrUQTF8bcOUBY=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/gettyimages-562759495-2000-523bac8213b3463c94f6fd20e4559bd3.jpg)
Modern audiences can be forgiven if when they think "1970s" and "Al Pacino" their first thought goes to The Godfather trilogy, but Pacino's first trip to the Oscars was for his Best Actor nomination for portraying an undercover New York City police officer in Serpico. Campaigning the Academy has changed since then, as Pacino recently told EW, "To me this is all very new. I haven’t been out and about [this] much for years."
Antonio Banderas, 1992
![Antonio Banderas](https://ew.com/thmb/uWSyj9SvVe-PaDgedu9A2CZBAzs=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/1-antonio-banderas-2-2000-be1dea092a7344a9865524313b296642.jpg)
When Antonio Banderas was a presenter at the 1992 Oscars ahead of the release of American breakthrough in The Mambo Kings, he told interviewers on the red carpet just a year before he couldn't speak English. While Oscar success has eluded him in the years between, the internationally lauded performer is up for Best Actor for his role in Pedro Almodóvar's Pain and Glory.
Cynthia Erivo, 2017
![Cynthia Erivo](https://ew.com/thmb/elA7rv5RdGw6s_YKB6SQy10GZ-s=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/11-cynthia-erivo-1-2000-655f6aff37ce4022b6ca8fcb7e01879d.jpg)
Cynthia Erivo is just an Oscar away from an EGOT, and before her nomination for Best Actress in Harriet, she sang at the 2017 Oscars’ Governors Ball shortly after her Tony award win for The Color Purple.
Brad Pitt, 1992
![Brad Pitt](https://ew.com/thmb/Ljqywa37fES924EsRxZarwU9RLA=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/10-brad-pitt-1-2000-f046bbcd17e04f0ebef1998683e76af2.jpg)
When Juliette Lewis attended the 1992 Academy Awards as a nominee for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Cape Fear she brought her then-boyfriend Brad Pitt as her date. It wasn't long before Pitt was at the show with his own nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 1996 for 12 Monkeys — this time with a new girlfriend, Gwyneth Paltrow, in tow.
Saoirse Ronan, 2008
![Saoirse Ronan](https://ew.com/thmb/1k3un7NDgfowiO2Ik-UBnGJkGmE=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/13-saoirse-ronan-1-2000-a388a750f12d4a8bb53797336f84f1c5.jpg)
Saoirse Ronan is hardly a stranger to the Oscars thanks to a 2008 Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role in Atonement. With Little Women, Ronan is up for her third Best Actress nomination after being recognized by the Academy with nominations for both Brooklyn and Lady Bird.
Joaquin Phoenix, 2001
![Joaquin Phoenix](https://ew.com/thmb/8-HusqZjk6C-ObWJWlUTyGCPd7E=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/4-joaquin-phoenix-1-2000-8ad593f5e6ae47b9812d95d84741f772.jpg)
Joaquin Phoenix took to the Oscar red carpet in 2001 when he was nominated for his portrayal of Commodus in Gladiator, which earned him a nomination from the Academy for Best Supporting Actor. Since then he has received two nominations for his leading roles in Walk the Line, The Master, before his nom for Joker.
Renée Zellweger, 1999
![Renee Zellweger](https://ew.com/thmb/KZjZAU5l-QbjFo744bv9qATG4hs=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/15-renee-zellweger-1-2000-24f2a0291af24df0b01460d5d4cdea94.jpg)
In 1999, Renée Zellweger — already a household name thanks to Jerry Maguire — introduced Allison Moorer's performance of "A Soft Place To Fall," the Best Song nominee from The Horse Whisperer. The 2020 Academy Awards will be the third time Zellweger has attended while up for Best Actress in Leading Role, as she was nominated for Bridget Jones's Diary and Chicago before Judy. She’s no stranger to the statue though, as she won Best Supporting Actress for Cold Mountain in 2004.
Adam Driver, 2019
![Adam Driver](https://ew.com/thmb/_-T6XE6TvZ2E0GbA7EaQPPqdB_E=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/3-adam-driver-1-2000-9da4655f8d7044fb93e7212ce65ecd7b.jpg)
We're guessing there wasn't a lot of time for red carpets in Adam Driver's previous career in the Marines, but Driver has made quick work of Hollywood, teaming up with directors Joel and Ethan Coen, Jim Jarmusch, Steven Spielberg, Steven Soderbergh, and Clint Eastwood. It was Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman that earned Driver a trip to the Oscars as he was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in 2019.
Diane Ladd and Laura Dern (right), 1975
![Diane Ladd and Laura Dern 1975](https://ew.com/thmb/p8W5b8sgwYQM5DDv61zcX-MIIsg=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/shutterstock_editorial_10365481a-2000-f62f0b06e4e342ab9af91c315eecb2e4.jpg)
A young Laura Dern made her Oscar debut attending the awards show with her mother Diane Ladd who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for 1974’s Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, and it wasn’t long before both were recognized together with matching Best Supporting Actress nominations for 1991’s Rambling Rose. Dern earned a second nomination in the category in 2015 for Wild before her 2020 nod for Marriage Story.
Jonathan Pryce, 2020
![Jonathan Pryce](https://ew.com/thmb/5WD7Lyx5D-yFFAlkXSh2SUl87LE=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/5-jonathan-pryce-1-2000-8307805760c848be9ed0b5e95abf39b7.jpg)
Despite the awards Jonathan Pryce has picked up over the years at Cannes and the Tonys, this is his first year on the Oscar circuit, nominated for Best Actor for The Two Popes.
Margot Robbie, 2014
![Margot Robbie](https://ew.com/thmb/PFv4PNRqAbIv12SCmy-nQP_uk2M=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/19-margot-robbie-1-2000-c265c21e4d8143f6939e458ccc48e8b7.jpg)
Margot Robbie first went to the Oscars in support of The Wolf of Wall Street which was up for five Academy Awards in 2014. It didn't take long for the Australian to return to the Oscars as she was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for I, Tonya in 2018 before landing a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 2020 for Bombshell.
Tom Hanks, 1987
![Tom Hanks](https://ew.com/thmb/gMz2SVkR_-7enXNjh5Hjy2B_mww=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/6-tom-hanks-1-2000-3ea370fe4d8f46e18d78cf6e9eda2fb1.jpg)
You can forgive the Academy for giving the ascending Tom Hanks in a comedic presenting slot alongside Bugs Bunny for Best Animated Short Film in 1987, it would be a couple of more years before his nomination for Big and wins for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump. Hanks has come a long way since then, but his nomination for Best Supporting Actor for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is his first in the category.
Joe Pesci, 1991
![Joe Pesci](https://ew.com/thmb/qG9K5E8bJ7-fYnMh9SYOBG0e4IA=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/9-joe-pesci-1-2000-41c78eed507e4bf98cd866648b7bd74f.jpg)
When Joe Pesci won the Best Supporting Actor for his role as Tommy DeVito in Goodfellas, he made one of the shortest Oscar acceptance speeches in history, offering up a humble, "It’s my privilege, thank you." It’s been nearly 30 years since then and it had to be talked out of retirement for his role in The Irishman, so if he wins a second Best Supporting Actor award, he might have a few more things to say.
Kathy Bates, 1991
![Kathy Bates](https://ew.com/thmb/STr3SWePkBrpnN9oBX7WlVStABk=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/16-kathy-bates-1-2000-22d4ad177dca41d094cd4040c2d69564.jpg)
"I'd like to thank the Academy. I've been waiting a long time to say that," is what Kathy Bates got to say on stage during her first trip to the Oscars when she won the award Best Actress in 1991 for Misery. Richard Jewell is Bates' third Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress after being recognized by the Academy for Primary Colors in 1999 and About Schmidt in 2003.
Anthony Hopkins, 1976
![Anthony Hopkins](https://ew.com/thmb/5QZ6zXOQhy8rSnBEkVaUHeXgVr8=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/7-anthony-hopkins-1-2000-ae8fd8ea4996407d85e88b5ae0edd245.jpg)
Pryce isn't the only pope portrayal to receive love from the Academy, as Anthony Hopkins is up for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Two Popes. While Hopkins wouldn't receive a nomination until his Best Actor win for Silence of the Lambs in 1993, he co-presented the award for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration Award with actress Charlotte Rampling in 1976.
Florence Pugh, 2020
![92nd Oscars Nominees Luncheon - Arrivals](https://ew.com/thmb/fvfJ4KiaA5Xo9-XiQ1bXWbHYHHQ=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/gettyimages-1202365374-2000-ab34592c1ee246109d188ecc4b4658dc.jpg)
Florence Pugh is only the second actor on the 2020 Oscars list who will be making their first appearance at the awards show, but few actresses saw a 2019 like her, with fan-favorite Midsommar and a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for playing Amy March in Little Women.
