It was halcyon days for family-friendly baseball movies in 1993. Rookie of the Year was a hit, but it was The Sandlot that became a cult classic and is still beloved today.

The movie introduced fans to a rough-and-tumble baseball team that was welcoming a new member to their crew, building a rivalry with a ferocious dog, and looking for love poolside. The Sandlot gave the world Tom Guiry's film debut, a star turn for Mike Vitar, more Patrick Renna (someone early '90s movies couldn't get enough of), and a breakout role for Denis Leary.

To remember everyone's favorite motley crew of baseball-loving kids, here's a look back at the movie's stars and where they are now.

Tom Guiry (Scotty Smalls)

Tom Guiry made his big-screen debut in The Sandlot as Scotty Smalls, the new kid in town.

The child star followed up the gig with turns in Lassie (1994), All I Wanna Do (1998), Black Hawk Down (2001), Mystic River (2003), and The Fitzgerald Family Christmas (2012). He went on to star on the short-lived NBC drama The Black Donnellys and play roles in such films as The Revenant (2015), Wonder Wheel (2017), and The Unforgivable (2021).

But Guiry's role as Smalls is still his most recognizable, even all these years later. As he told EW in 2008, "I don't think I look like Scotty Smalls anymore, but anywhere I go — if I go to the mall — and there's a kid between 6 and 12, they notice me. They're like, 'Smalls!' Even now."

After appearing in indie films and an episode of Brooklyn Bridge, Mike Vitar was Sandlot's all-star as Benny "the Jet" Rodriguez. According to director David Mickey Evans, Vitar was the first actor to audition for the role in the second round of casting.

He went on to earn credits for D2: The Mighty Ducks (1994) and D3: The Mighty Ducks (1996) before making his final onscreen appearance in a 1997 episode of Chicago Hope and kicking off a career as a firefighter.

A '90s staple, Patrick Renna earned his first big-screen credit for The Sandlot as Hamilton "Ham" Porter and rounded out the decade with appearances in Son in Law (1993), The Big Green (1995), P.U.N.K.S. (1999), and Speedway Junky (1999).

In the years since, Renna booked gigs on Judging Amy; The Closer; Boston Legal; Bones; Fear, Inc.; and GLOW.

Renna reunited with his Sandlot castmates in 2018, telling EW that they became fast friends again during an interview two years later. "One of the deciding factors on casting any of us was that they would bring us out to make sure that we got along with the other guys. And because we were all such good friends in real life it showed through on the screen, and it's just funny even 25 years later, we fell right back into it.”

The Sandlot found its Michael "Squints" Palledorous in Chauncey Leopardi. The young actor came into the role after appearing in Father of the Bride (1991) and episodes of L.A. Law and Evening Shade.

"Chauncey played a goofball in the movie but was the complete antithesis of that in real life," director Evans explained to EW. "He was a little player."

Leopardi's post-Squints roles include turns in films like Houseguest (1995), Casper (1995), The Big Green, The Opposite of Sex (1998), and Coldwater (2013), and on shows such as Freaks and Geeks and Gilmore Girls.

In 2019, he popped up in a music video for the Logic song "Homicide," featuring Eminem.

Marty York landed his first acting gig as The Sandlot's Alan "Yeah-Yeah" McClennan.

The actor spoke about his memories of the Sandlot set with theCHIVE in 2023, recalling, "Everybody was kind of new at baseball, or there were a few that had played here and there but for the most part, none of us were really all that good. Mike was really good. Benny the Jet. He was already a very good baseball player. The rest of us...not so much."

He went on to fill his résumé with roles on Boy Meets World, Wings, Hey Arnold!, The Eric Andre Show, and SMILF.

Brandon Quintin Adams joined The Sandlot as Kenny DeNunez, taking on the part after appearing in Moonwalker (1988), The People Under the Stairs (1991), and The Mighty Ducks (1992).

"Outside the set, they had us all at these apartments. It was really like summer vacation," Adams told Nerdtropolis of his recollections of The Sandlot. "We were hanging out together, playing basketball, and baseball, and going to the pool. It’s funny because we were all looking forward to that pool scene. After all, it was so hot the whole time we were filming, but that was the coldest day out of the whole time we were there. But it was fun."

Adams earned subsequent credits for Ghost in the Machine (1993), D2: The Mighty Ducks, and episodes of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Boy Meets World, and Moesha. He took on a voice role as Rai in the video game Kingdom Hearts II.

Superman alum Victor DiMattia joined The Sandlot as Timmy Timmons, the elder of the Timmons brothers.

"It was like being in summer camp. It was one of the best summers of my life," DiMattia told PhillyVoice of his experiences on The Sandlot. "We hung out, goofed around on set most of the time, and then when we were done for the day, we would go back to where we would all hang out together and go swimming and play Super Nintendo together and stuff afterward. It was a blast."

Soon after, he wrapped his run as Sam on the TV show A Peaceable Kingdom and took a step back from acting. DiMattia went on to direct two shorts and returned to film in the late-2010s with roles in Get Married or Die (2018) and Death Rider in the House of Vampires (2021).

The younger of the Sandlot brothers, Shane Obedzinski played Tommy "Repeat" Timmons.

"Now that I'm older the fireworks scene is my standout," Obedzinski told BroadwayWorld of his favorite Sandlot moment. "The music helps bring that whole scene to a new level. It's powerful in all the ways that make America what it was then and should still be."

He quit acting after 1993, and opened the Florida-based restaurant Times Square Pizza Company.

Denis Leary made an early appearance in The Sandlot, playing Smalls' stepfather, Bill.

Tom Guiry recalled being surprised by Leary. "I was expecting him to show up on set with like a leather jacket and a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, talking really fast," he told TIME magazine in 2013. "I remember saying to my mom at the time, 'He's so different from how I thought he'd be!'"

Leary's career took off from there, including Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated turns on Rescue Me and Recount, and big-screen appearances in Operation Dumbo Drop (1995), Suicide Kings (1997), Wag the Dog (1997), Small Soldiers (1998), The Thomas Crown Affair (1999), and The Amazing Spider-Man (2012).

His later TV work included Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, Animal Kingdom, The Moodys, and Law & Order: Organized Crime.

Marley Shelton joined The Sandlot as town lifeguard Wendy.

When We Got This Covered asked Shelton in 2011 if she’d have any interest in doing a movie like The Sandlot again, she replied, “Oh gosh, yeah, I think The Sandlot is just such a great, classic movie. It’s amazing how it’s kind of held up. I love the story and the period, the 1960’s, was such a great time in American history. I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

After playing the woman of Squints' desire, the actress earned credits for Warriors of Virtue (1997), Trojan War (1997), Pleasantville (1998), Sugar & Spice (2001), Bubble Boy (2001), Uptown Girls (2003), and Planet Terror (2007).

Shelton also memorably played Judy Hicks in multiple Scream films and stars on the Paramount+ series 1923.

Raiders of the Lost Ark alum Karen Allen signed on to play Smalls' mom in The Sandlot.

Allen was surprised to see just how much longevity The Sandlot has had over the years. "I didn’t have a clue that it was such a big hit. At all," she told The AVClub. "It's sort of sweet, actually. I liked that mom. I think it might have even been the first mom I ever played, which is kind of fun."

She followed up the gig with The Perfect Storm (2000), In the Bedroom (2001), Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), White Irish Drinkers (2010), and Colewell (2019) — for which she earned a Film Independent Spirit Award nomination — and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023).
