Tom Cruise reveals official title for Mission: Impossible 6

As Mission: Impossible 6 director Christopher McQuarrie puts the "finishing touches" on the film's first trailer, his star, Tom Cruise, has revealed the official title of the next installment in the Ethan Hunt action franchise.

The first three films utilized Roman numerals, which turned into subtitles for Ghost Protocol and then Rogue Nation. Now it's Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

The title was revealed over social media as Cruise posted an image of the production's clapboard. "Get ready," the actor teased.

Putting two and two together, this likely means Ethan & Co. will be dealing with the fallout of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, which saw him grappling with the international rogue organization known as the Syndicate.

"The title has multiple meanings in the film, from the literal to the figurative," McQuarrie told Empire. "There is the threat of nuclear terrorism hanging over the movie, which is the literal threat."

Figuratively speaking, the director said, "There's the notion that what's happened in the movie is the end result of choices that Ethan Hunt has made in his life. It's Ethan's past come back to haunt him. It's the fallout of all his good intentions."

Cruise also shared a new image from Fallout of Ethan dangling off the side of an in-flight helicopter. "We've upped the ante for the sixth #MissionImpossible," he wrote. "I can't wait for you guys to see more."

Before filming began in Paris, McQuarrie said "he may have found something" to top the opening sequence of Rogue Nation. You know, the one where Cruise is latched onto the outside of an airplane as it takes off. Paparazzi had captured a ton of photos involving helicopters. Could this be what he was referring to?

In their pursuit of upping the ante, Cruise injured his ankle in August while performing what appeared to be a building-to-building stunt jump. Production was temporarily halted to give the 55-year-old actor a chance to heal up, but the film is still on course to make its release date this year.

Cruise is joined in Fallout by Rebecca Ferguson, a mustachioed Henry Cavill, Simon Pegg, Angela Bassett, Alec Baldwin, Ving Rhames, and Vanessa Kirby.

The film is scheduled for theaters on July 27, but keep an eye out in the days ahead for the first trailer.
