Jared Leto denies sending Suicide Squad costars used condoms

Jared Leto calls reports he gifted his Suicide Squad costars with used condoms as part of his total immersion into the role of the Joker "total bullsh–."

The actor has been known to fully immerse himself in his roles, including Denis Villeneuve's forthcoming Blade Runner 2049, where Leto went without sight for the duration of the shoot in order play the blind and mysterious Niander Wallace in the sci-fi sequel. But the actor swatted away any talk of being any more dedicated than other actors.

"I really just work hard," Leto says during a special EW Radio Spotlight special on Wednesday (video above). "There's nothing that special in the way work compared to anyone else." (That said, he never even got to see the spectacular sets in Budapest or lay eyes on costars, Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford.)

But Leto thinks sometimes things go on to have a life of their own — like when he played the Joker in last year's Suicide Squad.

"Most of it was total bullsh–," he says of reports he went above and beyond for the twisted villain. For example? "Like that I was giving used condoms to people, which was not true," he says. "It doesn't matter how loud you shout or hold up a sign with your pants off in Times Square — people will run the story that they want." (Leto joked about the used condoms during a red carpet interview before the film's release last year.)

As Leto explains, wrap gifts were given to the Suicide Squad cast, which included Will Smith, Viola Davis, Cara Delevingne, and Margot Robbie. "On set, we were all laughing," he says. "People were thrilled to [get] them. Whatever the Joker would give, was the idea. I didn't really even put them together, basically. It was my team and my assistant. We were all having fun with it. It was really touching." Leto says the gifts included a "porno magazine — plus 60."

"Was I focused when I was doing the scenes? Of course," he adds. "Look you work the way you work, I'll work the way I work. You can kiss my ass if you don't like."

The full interview will air on EW Radio Sirius XM 105 on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 6 p.m EST.

Blade Runner 2049 will hit theaters on Oct. 6.
