New Wonderstruck trailer is a mesmerizing trip through time

From the glam-rocking age of 1970s Britain in Velvet Goldmine to the snow-swept city streets of the 1950s-set romance Carol, director Todd Haynes typically shuttles audiences back in time to memorable periods throughout history, and the new trailer for his Cannes competition title Wonderstruck takes his signature affinity for the past to a new level.

The new clip seamlessly flits through multiple periods, following a young runaway, Rose (newcomer Millicent Simmonds), who seeks the attention of a beloved idol (longtime Haynes collaborator Julianne Moore) in 1927, while simultaneously chronicling the journey of a boy (Oakes Fegley) searching for his father against the backdrop of 1977 New York City.

“I felt I could really relate to Rose and feeling isolated and alone,” Simmonds, who is deaf, previously told EW of her attraction to the character — the first she’s ever played on the big screen. “I feel that around hearing people everyday. I’m grateful he chose me to play Rose. And I think it means a lot to the deaf community for them to see someone deaf play a deaf character.”

Simmonds and her fellow cast and crew received enthusiastic notices from movie critics in May, when Haynes world-premiered the film in competition at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. Particular praise was given to Haynes’ direction as well as Carter Burwell’s score and Ed Lachman’s cinematography.

Landing in an Oscar-friendly release window this fall, Wonderstruck is set for theatrical release on Oct. 20. Watch the film’s new preview above.
