First Wonderstruck trailer is a Julianne Moore-themed blast from the past

Todd Haynes has taken everyone from Cate Blanchett (Carol) to Ewan McGregor (Velvet Goldmine) into the deepest reaches of the past across many a throwback drama, but the first trailer for his latest project, Wonderstruck, sees the Oscar-nominated filmmaker reuniting with his tried-and-true muse, Julianne Moore (Safe, Far From Heaven), for a time-hopping venture into a dramatized version of two distinct moments in U.S. history.

Based on the lavishly illustrated book by Brian Selznick, Wonderstruck follows two children — Ben, a boy who loses his hearing after a freak accident in 1977 before setting off to find his long-lost father, and Rose, a deaf girl who embarks on a journey to locate a Hollywood celebrity (Moore) in 1927 New York City — whose paths intersect over a span of 50 years.

The new clip, which debuted online Thursday, teases Haynes’ penchant for period flair, set to David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” as it charts Ben and Rose’s respective journeys, which includes venturing out into unknown urban spaces and frequenting the same museum, albeit decades apart.

Wonderstruck is the American auteur’s most recent project to generate heat on the awards season trail, after debuting to largely positive reviews and Oscar buzz — particularly for Ed Lachman’s cinematography and Carter Burwell’s retro-inspired score — in competition at Cannes in May.

Amazon Studios looks to enter the Academy Awards fray in the months ahead, partnering with Roadside Attractions to release the film in theaters on Oct. 20 — a prime release date for films vying for above-the-line placement in key Oscar categories.
