Flatliners trailer: Ellen Page unlocks horrific secrets of the afterlife

Crossing over to the other side has its side effects

What happens when we die? It's a question movies continue to toy with, more recently with The Discovery and The Lazarus Effect, not to mention on television with The O.A. Now, Hollywood is revisiting a classic, Flatliners, to further explore the afterlife concept.

The trailer for the upcoming reboot — directed by Niels Arden Oplev, who helmed Noomi Rapace as the OG Girl with the Dragon Tattoo — sees five medical students conducting heart-stopping experiments to document what they can about the effects of death. By stopping their hearts for minutes on end, they can log firsthand observations of the afterlife. As the team starts treating the experiments as a game and becoming drunk on this feeling of immortality, the horrors encroach. They begin to see unsettling visions and soon the side effects start "hunting" them down.

These five lucky students are played by Ellen Page, Diego Luna (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Nina Dobrev (The CW's The Vampire Diaries), James Norton (ITV's Grantchester), and Kiersey Clemons (Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising). Kiefer Sutherland starred in the original Flatliners film, released in 1990, and he's set to appear in the reboot.

The new Flatliners is scheduled for release on Sep. 29. See the trailer and poster above.
