Lenny Kravitz says he’s celibate, hasn't been in a serious relationship for 9 years: ‘It’s a spiritual thing’

“I have become very set in my ways, in the way I live,” the "Are You Gonna Go My Way" rocker says.

Lenny Kravitz told American women to stay away from him — and they listened.

In an interview with The Guardian, the “It Ain’t Over Til It’s Over” singer reflected on his romantic escapades, revealing that he hasn’t had a serious relationship for nine years. When the interviewer asked if he still sought to remain celibate until he finds the right partner, Kravitz said,  “Yes. It’s a spiritual thing.” He also said that though he wants to find romance, he’s not sure how he’d fare in a relationship. “I have become very set in my ways, in the way I live.”

The singer had once claimed to have been celibate from 2005 to 2008, though he later revealed that that wasn’t entirely true.

“I wasn’t being celibate then at all,’ he told The Telegraph in 2009. “It took years to get it right. To actually do it, and really try to walk the walk and not just talk it. It’s not like it’s not important —I think sex and intimacy and all that is very important. It’s just that I’m going to do it with my wife.”

Reps for Kravitz did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly's request for comment.

Elsewhere in the Guardian interview, Kravitz discussed how he “was becoming a player” while he was married to Lisa Bonet from 1987 to 1993.

“I didn’t like it. I didn’t want to be that guy. So I had to tackle that and it took years.” he said, adding that he addressed his infidelity “By taking responsibility. Discipline. Not letting my own desires take over.”

Kravitz also said that he’s largely given up smoking marijuana — but that he used to smoke upwards of 25 joints a day. “I was Bob Marley level.” he said. “I’d been smoking weed since I was 11. I stopped years ago. Maybe I’ll have a hit every now and then.”

The singer later explained that he has never been particularly impressed by his own looks.

“I have grown to accept myself and be comfortable with myself, but I have never been one to look in a mirror and go: ‘Ooh yeah, look at that! You’re so beautiful,’” he said. “And especially not back then, as a teen. Absolutely not.”

Though his physical fitness attracts attention from fans and the media, Kravitz said he prioritizes working out as an act of discipline, not vanity.

“I don’t want to be in the gym at 2 a.m., but I know that I must,” he said. “Because it’s part of my discipline — it’s about body, mind and spirit. I want all of those three elements aligned. If my body’s in shape and my spirit and mind are not, then it’s just something nice to look at or to boast about. Who cares? For me, all of it has to be aligned. And I have to do the work it takes to have all of those in alignment so my being can be at its maximum.”

The rock star and style icon went viral in April by posting a video of himself pumping iron at the gym dressed in leather pants, a mesh tank top, and sunglasses. Kravitz later explained the very practical reason for his unusual exercise garb.

"I'm always working out in leather pants or jeans and boots and whatever — if I'm not doing cardio," Kravitz, 59, told Variety. "If I'm doing cardio, obviously I'm going to wear sweats because I'm going to be sweating all over the place. But if I'm lifting weights, I don't sweat so much."

Kravitz’s 12th studio album, Blue Electric Light, is now available to purchase and stream.
