Fleabag wins Best Comedy at Golden Globes, Phoebe Waller-Bridge thanks Obama

Another delighted look to camera, another trophy. Fleabag claimed the award for Best Television Series — Musical or Comedy at the 77th annual Golden Globes on Sunday night. It was the second win of the night for creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who also claimed the Best Actress trophy in the TV comedy category for her work on the show.

The Amazon Prime comedy — which stars Waller-Bridge as the reckless, soul-searching owner of a guinea-pig-themed café — was adored by critics and hit it big at the Emmys last fall. The show won the Best Comedy trophy and Waller-Bridge emerged victorious in the comedy actress and writing categories.

During her acceptance speech and requisite thank-yous, Waller-Bridge offered special gratitude to a former POTUS: Barack Obama. “Personally I’d like to also thank for Obama for putting us on his list,” she quipped. “And some of you may know, he’s always been on mine. And if you don’t get that joke, please watch season 1 of Fleabag really, really quickly.”

Last month, Obama spotlighted Waller-Bridges’ Fleabag ina list of three shows that he considered as “powerful as movies.” And, of course, when Waller-Bridge mentions that he was on hers, she’s referring to the scene in which her character masturbates to an Obama speech.

When asked in the press room if she would work with Barack and Michelle, who signed a Netflix production deal, she quipped, “I think I’ve said quite enough about Obama this evening, thank you very much.”

Waller-Bridge also reiterated her desire to not make any more episodes of Fleabag; she has previously insisted that season 2 will serve as the show’s last. “I haven’t changed my mind about season 3,” she told reporters backstage. “It feels even more like the right decision, the further we go along this journey.

Season 2 of Fleabag featured Andrew Scott, Olivia Colman, Bret Gelman, Fiona Shaw, Sian Clifford, and Jenny Rainsford, Bill Paterson, and Hugh Skinner.

Fleabag’s competition in the category included Barry, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Kominsky Method, and The Politician.
