Ransom Riggs created a fantastical world of children with special powers in the first book of his Peculiar trilogy and now Tim Burton helms the film adaptation. Eva Green stars as the titular enigmatic headmistress and Asa Butterfield is Miss Peregrine’s newest charge, Jacob. --Allison Sadlier

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

Film Title: The Girl on the Train

Release Date: Oct. 7

It was the thriller that took 2015 by storm: Rachel Watson (played by Emily Blunt in the film), a divorced alcoholic with voyeuristic tendencies, thinks she witnesses part of a crime. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by J.K. Rowling

Film Title: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Release Date: Nov. 18

What was originally a spinoff textbook to the Harry Potter series becomes a film about the book's fictional author Newt Scamander. Eddie Redmayne will play the Hogwarts dropout who has to collect a coterie of escaped magical creatures in 1920s New York City. -- Allison Sadlier

Film Title: The Light Between Oceans

Release Date: Sept. 2

Real-life lovebirds Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander lead Derek Cianfrance’s adaption of M.L. Stedman’s 2012 tearjerker. After diving into a whirlwind romance amidst Western Australia’s idyllic coast, a war vet-turned-lighthouse keeper and his wife take in a castaway newborn when they fail to have a baby of their own. A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

Film Title: A Monster Calls

Release Date: Dec. 23

A monster movie getting Oscar nominations? It could happen here, as Patrick Ness’ A Monster Calls is more about grief than supernatural horror. (Ness himself wrote the screenplay for the movie, directed by J. A. Bayona.) Newcomer Lewis MacDougall stars as Conor O’Malley, a boy who’s visited by a storytelling monster as his mother suffers from terminal cancer. After some release date changes, A Monster Calls is set to be in theaters Dec. 23. --Christian Holub

American Pastoral by Philip Roth

Film Title: American Pastoral

Ewan McGregor makes his directorial debut alongside Dakota Fanning and Jennifer Connolly in this adaption of Philip Roth’s 1997 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Set in the post-war turmoil of 1960s America, the film follows a successful businessman as his life begins to unravel when his daughter adopts a radical new political affiliation. --Dana Getz

Inferno by Dan Brown

Film Title: Inferno

Release Date: Oct. 28

The third of Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon novels to be adapted into a film starring Tom Hanks, Inferno once again combines Renaissance art with modern terror, as Langdon races against time to solve a conspiracy based around Dante’s Inferno. Inferno is due out Oct. 28, just in time for Halloween. --Christian Holub

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk by Ben Fountain

Film Title: Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk

Release Date: Nov. 11

Helmed by Ang Lee, the film adaptation of Ben Fountain's 2012 novel about an Iraq war hero who comes home and is honored at the 2004 Super Bowl takes major risks when it comes to filmmaking. Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk was shot at 120 frames per second, a technique that's used to capture scenes "how your eyes see things," Lee told EW earlier this year. Starring newcomer Joe Alwyn, Kristen Stewart, Chris Tucker, Steve Martin, Garrett Hedlund, and Vin Diesel, Billy Lynn is told through flashbacks, imagined futures, and a poignant present. -- Jessica Goodman

Fences by August Wilson

Film Title: Fences

Release Date: Dec. 25

Denzel Washington directs and stars in the Scott Rudin-produced drama based on August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play by the same name, which follows Negro League baseball player Troy Maxson (Washington) after he retires and begins working as a garbage man in Pittsburgh. Washington previously played Maxson in the 2010 Broadway revival of Fences and Viola Davis, who costarred in that production as Maxson's wife, will join him in the film version as well. The Paramount flick is well positioned for awards season when it hits theaters on Dec. 25.-- Jessica Goodman

Nocturnal Animals (Dec. 9) — Focus Features

Film Title: Nocturnal Animals

Fashion designer-turned-director Tom Ford wrote and directed this adaptation of Wright’s 1993 novel about a woman (Amy Adams) reading her ex-husband’s (Jake Gyllenhaal) manuscript (titled “Nocturnal Animals” in the book) — a novel that feels dangerously real and unsettlingly threatening to her. -- Isabella Biedenharn
