'Orphan Black': Show returns in April, expect more clones

The project: Orphan Black

The panel: Tatiana Maslany, Dylan Bruce, Jordan Gavaris, and creators John Fawcett and Graeme Manson.

The footage screened: Although nothing new was shown — they played an overall sizzle reel from season 1, a scene between Sarah (Maslany) and Paul (Bruce), a separate scene of Allison torturing Donny (Kristian Bruun), a Felix (Gavaris) highlights, and the cringe-worthy diner-jello encounter with Helena — BBC America did share a behind-the-scenes video of how they film Maslany as the different clones together. Snap judgment: The panel, held in a smaller room at the Con and moderated by EW’s Dalton Ross, was nuts for the show. An “Orphan Black” chant rang out before the Q&A session even began, and Ross noted that “if this panel were booked now, it would be in a much bigger room.”

The big revelations: The show will be back in April 2014, and according to Fawcett, there will be more clones. “We are making this wacky little clone shows and we do like our clones. I don’t think anyone would be surprised if we unveiled a few more clones in season 2.”

Neither Jordan nor Dylan sound like they do on the show. “I’m sorry I know this is very jarring for everyone because you were expecting a British accent,” Gavaris, who is Canadian, said. “I know it’s kind of jarring for you guys as well because I’m not speaking in my Batman voice,” Bruce joked later.

When questioned about how she gets in the mood to play the clones, Tatiana explained that she has different playlists for each. Allison is all showtunes and musicals; Cosima is electro, indie music; For Sarah it’s the Clash and the Prodigy; She listened to the Prodigy for Helena, too. What about Rachel? “Rachel is like ’90s slow jams,” Maslany said to a lot of laughter.

As for Supreme Court ruling that determined human DNA cannot be patented, Manson explained that the news would “definitely” affect the storyline in the future.

And, in case you were wondering, Bruce knew the show was a hit when he searched for “Paul’s rear-end” on the Internet and found pictures of himself, adding that he called his mom after his Googling. “‘Mom, I made it. My rear-end is on the Internet.’ And she said, ‘I’m so proud of you.'”

The only cliffhanger that was really addressed was Cosima’s health. “The truth is, it’s still up in the air. We don’t know what’s going to happen to Cosima,” Manson said.

Most incisive audience question: One fan asked if there would be flashbacks to dead clones Katya and Beth. “There has been a discussion of the Beth episode. I don’t know if you’re going to see it in season 2,” Fawcett answered.
