After five years of no new John Green fiction, fans can finally experience the first chapter of his upcoming novel Turtles All the Way Down. The YA author and fervent YouTuber posted a video Tuesday of him reading chapter 1, via his and brother Hank Green’s VlogBrothers channel.
Due Oct. 22 from Dutton Books, Turtles All the Way Down centers on 16-year-old Aza Holmes, who navigates “daily existence within the ever-tightening spiral of her own thoughts” and also plays detective to search for a missing billionaire. The character lives with a specific kind of obsessive-compulsive disorder, which Green has explained he shares, and the 10-minute video features much of her stressing over microbes, masticating food, and blood. “I’m not gonna lie, I’m pretty nervous,” Green admits after finishing.
