Avengers: Endgame, Parasite, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood top 2020 ADG Awards

All of this year’s best films and television shows wouldn’t be the same without the glorious settings in which they take place. Every year, the Art Directors Guild Awards honor this work, or the best in production design in films, television, commercials, music videos, and animated features.

The awards, which are in their 24th year, were held Saturday in Los Angeles. From Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, to Game of Thrones and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, several of the year’s biggest hits were nominated for top honors. Ultimately, Parasite, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Avengers: Endgame nabbed top honors for feature films. In television, the production designers of Maisel, Russian Doll, and The Umbrella Academy were some of the key winners.

On the film side, the ADG Awards are broken up by genre: period, fantasy, or contemporary (the television categories are broken up a little differently). Despite this, the ADG Awards can tell us a bit about what might win the corresponding Oscar for Best Production Design, which is not broken up by genre. This year’s nominees in that category are The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, 1917, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Parasite.

When it comes to winning the Academy Award for Best Production Design, over the last 10 years the winner of an ADG film honor has won the Oscar eight times, including three fantasy category winners (Avatar, Mad Max: Fury Road, Black Panther), four period film winners (Hugo, The Great Gatsby, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Shape of Water), and one contemporary film winner (La La Land). So, all in all, one of the winners from tonight’s ADG Awards is likely (although not guaranteed) to repeat at the Oscars.

It should be noted, though, that in the last 30 years, only one Best Production Design winner at the Oscars went to a non-fantasy film set in the present day: La La Land (2016). So chances are, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is probably the more likely winner, but anything could happen.
