Writers Guild Awards nominations include Get Out, I, Tonya, Call Me By Your Name

Just one day before nomination ballots are sent to Academy voters, the Writers Guild of America has announced its annual list of award nominees, giving a small push to steadfast screenplay competitors gunning for Oscar glory.

A24 and Fox led the pack of nominees Thursday, as each distributor notched two films across the group’s 10 nomination slots: Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird and Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber’s The Disaster Artist for the former, while Guillermo del Toro & Vanessa Taylor’s The Shape of Water and Scott Frank, James Mangold, and Michael Green’s X-Men film Logan tallied nods for the latter.

Also nominated among the original screenplay contenders are The Big Sick scribes Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani (after a notable Golden Globes shutout), Jordan Peele’s Oscar hopeful Get Out, and Steven Rogers’ script for Neon’s Tonya Harding biopic I, Tonya.

Adapted works recognized by the WGA include James Ivory’s long-gestating screenplay for Call Me by Your Name, the Aaron Sorkin-penned Molly’s Game, and the Virgil Williams/Dee Rees collaboration Mudbound.

As is the case every year, several of the current awards season’s weightier contenders will forego WGA recognition due to the guild’s eligibility stipulations, which require potential contenders to be made under WGA watch while adhering to the organization’s Minimum Basic Agreement bargaining accord.

Despite crossover membership between AMPAS and the Writers Guild, missing out on a WGA nomination rarely spells disaster for Oscar contenders, as the Academy has gone on to acknowledge WGA-shunned films like Lion, Room, Birdman, and The Theory of Everything with wins or nominations in the recent past.

This season’s films that did not meet WGA eligibility standards — or appear on the group’s 59-strong ballot, per Variety — includes Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (which is widely seen as a top player in the original screenplay Oscar race), Anthony McCarten’s Winston Churchill biopic Darkest Hour, Disney/Pixar’s animated family film Coco, and the Yorgos Lanthimos/Efthymis Filippou-penned The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

On the adapted front, most of the 2017 circuit’s mainstays were eligible for WGA nods, save for Matt Greenhalgh’s Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool and Lee Hall’s Victoria & Abdul.
