Moonlight, Beyoncé among early NAACP Image Award winners

Moonlight, Beyoncé’s Lemonade, The People v. O.J. Simpson, and Black-ish are among the winners already announced from the NAACP Image Awards ahead of the televised ceremony on Saturday.

During a gala dinner held at the Pasadena Conference Center on Friday, the honorees of 47 non-televised categories across film, television, music, and literature were revealed.

Moonlight earned four wins: Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali), Independent Motion Picture, Writing, and Directing (Barry Jenkins). ABC’s Black-ish and FX’s The People v. O.J. Simpson topped the television categories with three wins each, while Beyoncé earned five — including Female Artist, Music Video (“Formation”), Album (Lemonade), and Song (“Freedom”).

Filmmaker Ava DuVernay, who became the first woman of color to make a $100 million movie with Disney’s A Wrinkle In Time, also won for both her Netflix prison reform documentary, 13th, and her television series, Queen Sugar, which flaunts an all-female roster of directors.

The remaining nine categories, including Entertainer of the Year, will be announced during the two-hour telecast on TV One beginning at 9 p.m. ET Saturday night.
