The Edge of Seventeen

It’s being hailed as a “new coming-of-age dramedy that channels John Hughes films such as The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles,” though Kelly Fremon Craig’s The Edge of Seventeen stakes new claims on territory also covered by the likes of Alicia Silverstone in Clueless and Lindsay Lohan in Mean Girls.

For starters, the film is, true to its title, edgier than teen comedies of years past. It’s rated R, and features a sharp supporting cast including Woody Harrelson, Blake Jenner, and Kyra Sedgwick. It’s Hailee Steinfeld’s leading performance, however, that gives the film its signature crackle, as the young actress offers audiences her most endearing comedic work yet in this charming tale of a high schooler whose best friend begins dating her older brother.

The Edge of Seventeen opens Nov. 18 in theaters nationwide.

Manchester by the Sea

After taking the festival circuit by storm from Sundance to Toronto, Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea navigates the contentious waters of Oscar season with ease, earning stellar reviews from movie critics ahead of its limited theatrical bow. EW’s Chris Nashawaty called the film a “masterpiece” in his A-grade review, noting lead actor Casey Affleck, who stars as a depressed Massachusetts handyman unexpectedly tasked with caring for his brother’s son in a role likely to earn him a best actor nomination at the upcoming Academy Awards, “has never had a role that matches his minimal, anti-charisma style like this one,” while praising the performer’s “tendency to be mumbly and awkward and withholding,” which he says “fits his character perfectly.”

Manchester by the Sea opens Nov. 18 in limited release.

24K Magic by Bruno Mars

Two years following the release of his Mark Ronson-assisted smash “Uptown Funk,” Bruno Mars returns with a sizzling studio LP filled with synth-funk deliciousness. 24K Magic sees the singer dabbling in danceable throwback toe-tappers once again, this time across nine tracks produced entirely in collaboration with Shampoo Press & Curl. According to EW’s Eric Renner Brown, 24K Magic‘s lead single of the same name “brims with detail and finesse,” proving Mars is still as golden as pop stars come.

24K Magic is set for release on Friday, Nov. 18.

FilmStruck

Sure, Netflix is great for weekend television binges of guilty pleasures like Pretty Little Liars and Fuller House, but FilmStruck, presented by Turner Classic Movies, is a cinephile’s dream.
