Every week, the cast and crew of FXX’s sharp, raunchy, cult comedy, You’re the Worst, is taking EW behind the scenes. For each episode, one member is recapping, sharing thoughts on what went down, and walking us through the ins-and-outs of the show. This week, Aya Cash brings us into the sixth episode of season 3, “The Last Sunday Funday.”

Hey folks, Aya here again. I’m in Austin, TX and its 11 p.m. and I am frantically writing this because I forgot I had to. Here is the behind-the-scenes of life as a TV re-capper. FYI, I’m not getting paid. Also, I really hope someone proof-reads this because I have not.

Like Vernon at birth, Sunday Funday has died. The title of this episode is “The Last Sunday Funday.” Back in 2013, Stephen Falk and his oddball band of writers wrote about a day when drinks flowed and merry mayhem was had. When the episode came out in 2014, we were sent memes and screenshots tagged with #sundayfunday and were credited with starting something. But the truth is that our ragtag group of TV scribes was just straight out reporting the beginning of what is now a hugely annoying trend. When “Sunday Funday” is on a Forever 21 T-shirt, it’s time to move on.

We open at our normal brunch place (Maximilliano’s in Highland Park, if you’re interested — killer pasta at night). Gretchen realizes Sunday Funday is played out and uses this to get the group to do a scavenger hunt to go to a speakeasy she’s never been able to get into. Behind the scenes: Gretchen’s new obsession with mazes and puzzles is based on writers Eva Anderson and Alison Bennett’s love of such things, as is another obsession of Gretchen’s that we learn about later in the season. Side note to the side note: Eva has done tons of escape rooms, including one in Russia. I believe this year it was pitched that Sunday Funday could have been an escape room episode.

We follow the crew through the clues — Jimmy is kicking and screaming as usual, but seems to be very good at the game and secretly enjoying it all. Paul joins after Lindsay “summons him like Beetlejuice,” and Edgar realizes that smoking copious amounts of weed helps him with his PTSD. They all grab and shoot fireworks at him as immersion therapy (which by the way, we did). Those are real fireworks and Desi had a stunt double, but was standing there for the end. We wussy actors felt like real badasses that night.

Everyone ends the night in jail, which is actually a portal to the secret bar which charges over 20 dollars per drink and ends up being super lame. But Jimmy gets to sing, Lindsay is finally honest with Paul, and gets him to agree to watch as she bones other people. Everyone ends up in a better place than where we began.

A couple of stray thoughts…

  • These activities reunite the group after an incredibly moving episode about Edgar and his PTSD, and I think it’s nice to see the gang back together and helping each other. (Even though Lindsay and Gretchen bicker the whole episode and attempt to beat each other down, it never feels like they won’t work it out.)
  • Sam, Sh-tstain and Honeynutz kill it as usual — but here’s something you don’t know…one of them fell asleep during a take!
  • Big, big shout out to Tiffany Anders (our music supervisor) and Adam Blau (our composer). The music is always so good on this show. Tiffany’s choice for the fireworks scene was so spot on, and Adam wrote the song Jimmy sings. (Stephen Falk wrote the lyrics, and while we’re at it, shout out to Stephen — he also writes all the raps!)
  • Speaking of music, Chris requested to sing this year, and that’s why he sings the end song. I didn’t realize requests were being taken, so I’ll just put out a public plea to Stephen that in season 4, there should be a long massage scene with Kyle Chandler playing my masseur.

You’re the Worst airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on FXX.
