22-year-old Beyonce talks to Oprah about her growing fame in throwback video

Back before Beyoncé was known as Queen Bey, the newly anointed R&B princess sat down with the Queen of Daytime to talk about fame. A recently unearthed video from The Oprah Winfrey Show shows a 22-year-old Beyoncé, who in 2003 had just released her first solo album and was still figuring out how to handle her fame.

The Oprah Winfrey Network’s Twitter account on Monday shared the video from an episode which aired exactly 13 years ago. In the clip, Winfrey asks Beyoncé if her life is everything she dreamed it would be. “It’s everything and way, way more,” she replied with a big smile. “It’s really hard to have privacy. Sometimes it gets a little overwhelming, but I now have learned to take time for myself and I know my limits.”

The Destiny’s Child alumna’s appearance on Oprah came three months after her first solo album, Dangerously in Love debuted at No. 1. Her rising profile led to more media attention on her personal life, which at the time included rumors of a relationship with “’03 Bonnie & Clyde” collaborator Jay Z, whom she would eventually go on to marry. On the show that day, Beyoncé wouldn’t confirm being romantically involved with the rapper.

“I saw a lot of celebrities that I admired and some of the things they went through, and I probably would have been there,” she told Winfrey. “So I said to make sure every year take a vacation, I have to make sure every couple weeks I have days off, and do things that make me happy.”
