Marvel Runaways pilot coming to Hulu

If anyone specializes in runaways, it’s Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.

The duo, best known for their work on The O.C. — with the original runaway, Ryan Atwood — and for creating Gossip Girl, are working with Marvel Television and ABC Signature to adapt Marvel’s Runaways for Hulu. The book series, which debuted in 2003, tells the story of six teenagers who are unlikely friends until they realize that their parents are part of an evil crime organization. Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona are the comic’s creators.

“I’m a long-time fan of Runaways and couldn’t be more excited to bring Brian and Adrian’s characters to life,” said Schwartz in a statement.

Added Marvel television head Jeph Loeb, “We’ve known the Runaways’ story would make great television,” s, “and being lucky enough to have Josh and Stephanie — who have time and again created shows that speak so genuinely to this exact audience — write and produce the series is nothing short of remarkable.”

Marvel had originally developed Runaways as a film, with Iron Man 3 writer Drew Pearce penning a script for a potential feature. “We were really close to being made, and then this movie started to happen called The Avengers,” Pearce said in 2013. “Oddly, it pulled focus from the unheard-of brand Runaways, and it really did kind of consume the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s there — maybe it’ll be a Phase Three movie. I really hope so. I’m really proud of it and I think it’ll be a brilliant film, but I think it all depends what Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel, his master plan is.”

As was first reported by Deadline, Hulu has ordered a pilot for Runaways, along with additional scripts.

On Twitter, Schwartz called Marvel’s Runaways a “dream project.”

“Honored and excited to play in Brian K Vaughan’s sandbox!” he wrote.
