As the release of Danny Brown’s Atrocity Exhibition draws nearer, the Detroit rapper has shared details about the impending record.
Due Sept. 30, the project will feature assists from prominent names like Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Earl Sweatshirt, and Cypress Hill’s B-Real, as well as left-field powerhouses like South African songwriter Petite Noir and Los Angeles singer Kelela. It also reunites him with longtime collaborator Paul White. The pair’s eclectic, heavily sample-based London sessions cost $70,000 to clear.
“A lot of people cheap. And that’s why their music sounds cheap,” Brown told Rolling Stone of the price tag. “I wanna make timeless stuff, so you’re gonna have to spend a couple dollars. You could have Rolex or you can have a Swatch.”
Atrocity Exhibition, Brown’s fourth album, marks his first collection in nearly three years, following 2013’s critically acclaimed Old. The title is an homage to Joy Division’s 1980 song of the same name, drawing inspiration from Raekwon, early Björk, Joy Division, Talking Heads, and System of a Down’s Toxicity.
“That song, [Ian Curtis is] pretty much talking about how he feels like he’s part of a freak show almost. People just wanna come see him and they just wanna see him be a certain type of way… That’s just how I felt with this album, ’cause a lot of people expect for me to be some crazy drugged-out I-don’t-know,” Brown said. “With Old, I wanted to have those performance songs so I can play those shows. That was what was a part of my world, doing festivals. Whereas this album is just my sound. This is Danny Brown.”
Thus far, he’s only shared “When It Rain,” a menacing, speed-rapped track with a VHS-cut video. He’ll launch a fall tour in support of Atrocity Exhibition Sept. 14 in Philadelphia, wrapping around North America with dates in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Atlanta before closing Nov. 5 in Cleveland.
