Hugh Grant didn't recognize Renee Zellweger

Despite starring in several movies alongside Renee Zellweger, Hugh Grant apparently has a hard time recognizing her — at least from the eyes up.

While on Watch What Happens Live Thursday, the British actor was shown the top halves of six of his former female costars’ faces and asked which one he still has the most contact. “None — they all hate me I think,” he said. When host Andy Cohen asked which one was “most down to earth,” Grant was a bit stumped.

“Down to earth — that’s pushing it,” he began. “Who is the one second from the right, because I’ve never seen her before in my life?”

After Cohen identified her as Zelleweger, Grant exclaimed, “Oh, Renee! Not exactly down to earth — out to lunch.” He eventually named Sarah Jessica Parker as the most down to earth of the bunch.

He and Zellweger acted together more than a decade ago, appearing in both Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) and its sequel, Briget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004).

His comments come on the heels of a pointed essay Zellweger penned for the Huffington Post. Following a film critic’s op-ed that argues the actress looks different in the trailers for Bridget Jones’s Baby, Zellweger took aim at the sexist double standards that have long loomed over Hollywood.

“Ubiquitous online and news source repetition of humiliating tabloid stories, mean-spirited judgments, and false information is not harmless,” she wrote. “It increasingly takes airtime away from the countless significant unprecedented current events affecting our world. It saturates our culture, perpetuates unkind and unwise double standards, lowers the level of social and political discourse, standardizes cruelty as a cultural norm, and inundates people with information that does not matter.”

Zellweger will reprise her role as the titular character in Bridget Jones’s Baby in September, while Grant stars opposite Meryl Streep and Simon Helberg in Florence Foster Jenkins, in theaters Friday.
