The first photos from Amy Adams’ upcoming sci-fi drama Arrival have surfaced.

The film, directed by Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Prisoners), follows an ace linguist, Louise Banks (Adams), who leads a team of experts investigating a group of mysterious spacecraft that have landed at various locations around the world, pushing mankind to the brink of war.

“This isn’t a graphic-novel universe or creating a new universe. This happens in our world today, as it exists,” Adams, currently in London filming Justice League as Lois Lane, told USA Today about the film. “Not having to transport myself to a universe where superheroes exist, which is also fun, really helped me ground the character and the experience.”

Two-time Oscar-nominee Jeremy Renner plays mathematician Ian Donnelly, who assists Banks in deciphering a strange alien language. Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker costars in Arrival, which also features Michael Stuhlbarg, Tzi Ma, and Mark O’Brien. Lights Out scribe Eric Heisserer adapted the film’s screenplay from Ted Chiang’s 1998 sci-fi novella Story of Your Life.

Arrival, which Paramount is seemingly positioning as a major awards season player, is set to screen at key pre-Oscar film festivals in the fall. The project hits the Venice Film Festival, which begins Aug. 30, first, before traveling to Toronto later in Sept.

Paramount will release Arrival to theaters on Nov. 11.
