Robin Williams: Zelda Williams remembers her dad on his birthday

Zelda Williams paid tribute to her late father, Robin Williams, on what would have been his 65th birthday Thursday.

“Still not really sure what to do on days like today,” the actress wrote on Instagram. “I know I can’t give you a present anymore, but I guess that means I’ll just have to keep giving them in your name instead.”

Robin died in August 2014 at the age of 63. After his death, Zelda previously told EW she spent her time writing scripts. “Whether by my own volition or otherwise, I was given a year-and-a-half-break after Dad passed,” she said. “It was kind of like an elephant in the room, and everyone was giving me space, whether I wanted it or not…. I was really appreciative of the fact that everyone loved Dad so much, but [I] did get looked at like a butterfly that you were going to damage, and that’s in its own way sweet, but also alienating and difficult. I had an enormous amount of time to myself.”

Now, she’s starring in Freeform horror drama Dead of Summer as a transgender man. “It’s interesting,” she told EW. “[My dad] missed out on me being proud of myself by about a year and a half, and that’s the one thing that’s really sad for me, because I know he was always proud of me. I think he would’ve loved that I was happy.”

In her Instagram note, she said that she tried to help three causes this year to commemorate her father’s birthday: “rescue dogs, people suffering from disabilities, and our nation’s wounded warriors.” “So I donated to freedomservicedogs.org,” she said. “They rescue pups from shelters and train them so that they can be paired with someone in dire need of their help and companionship. Thought you’d get a kick out of furry, four legged friends helping change the world, one warrior in need at a time.”
