Shooter premiere postponed after Dallas sniper attack

USA has delayed the premiere of the conspiracy thriller Shooter by one week in response to the recent sniper attack in Dallas that left five police officers dead and seven others wounded.

“In light of recent tragic events and out of respect for the victims, their families and our viewers, we have decided to postpone the premiere date for the upcoming USA Network series Shooter, to July 26,” a network spokesperson said in a statement Monday.

The Dallas attack occurred July 7 when Micah Johnson, a 25-year-old military veteran who served in Afghanistan, opened fire on officers at a rally against police violence. Two civilians were also injured. Police ended a standoff with Johnson by killing him with a robot-delivered explosive device.

Shooter is based on the 2007 Mark Wahlberg film of the same name (itself based on Stephen Hunter’s novel Point of Impact) and stars Ryan Phillippe as a former Marine marksman who is forced to revisit his treacherous past after learning of a conspiracy to kill the president.

In light of the subject matter, USA has partnered with veterans groups such as Got Your 6, which works to bring accuracy and sensitivity to depictions of veterans in film and television.
