Jake Gyllenhaal returns to the stage for one-off performance of Sunday in the Park with George

For one night only, Jake Gyllenhaal is taking a break from the big screen for a good cause. It was announced Tuesday that the 35-year old actor will play the lead role in a one-off concert performance of Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George to raise money for the New York City Center.

Featuring music and lyrics by Sondheim, Sunday in the Park with George revolves around the romantic entanglements and artistic challenges facing painter Georges Seurat leading up to the completion of his “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.” Its original Broadway production, directed by James Lapine, won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1985.

Though he starred in several high-profile movies in the recent past, including the indie thriller Nightcrawler and the boxing drama Southpaw, Gyllenhaal previously took to the stage for a performance in the Encores! Off-Center production of Little Shop of Horrors, which ran for two nights at the New York City Center in 2015. Gyllenhaal’s first major theatrical role was on London’s West End in a 2002 revival production of Kenneth Lonergan’s This Is Our Youth.

The New York City Center’s annual Gala event will take place on the same evening as the performance. Tickets for Sunday in the Park with George are $75, and will be available Wednesday on nycitycenter.org, while benefit table prices range from $2,500 to $150,000.

Sunday in the Park with George, starring Gyllenhaal, debuts for one night only on Monday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. ET at New York City Center.
