'Good Wife' spin-off moving forward, CBS confirms

The Good Wife spin-off is moving forward.

CBS confirmed at its upfront presentation to advertisers in New York on Wednesday that the rumored follow-up to its long-running legal drama has been greenlit by the network’s subscription-only streaming company CBS All Access.

The spin-off tells new stories about Good Wife characters Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski, who was nominated for six Emmys for the role) and Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo). The story in the spinoff will pick up one year after the events of the final episode of the original series. Good Wife creators Robert and Michelle King are to co-write the first episode and serve as executive producers of the CBS TV Studios-produced series. Other executive producers inclucde Ridley Scott, David Zucker, Liz Glotzer and Brooke Kennedy.

“The quality of The Good Wife has always rivaled anything on television and we’re excited to tell more stories with some of the brilliant characters Robert and Michelle King created,” said David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios.

Last February, during its coverage of the Super Bowl, CBS announced that the Sunday night drama would conclude with the current seventh season. Though never a ratings hit, the series racked up Emmy nominations and plenty of critical acclaim at a time when cable dramas tend to dominate the major awards.

The Good Wife pin-off will be the second scripted series in the works for CBS All Access. In November 2015, the company announced plans to premiere a new version of Star Trek in January 2017 that will introduce new characters and new worlds. Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote and produced the movie Star Trek with Roberto Orci and Star Trek Into Darkness with Orci and Damon Lindelof, will serve as executive producer for the new series.
