Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has worked a bit of real magic for a fan asking for support in a time of need.

On Wednesday, Twitter user @AlwaysJLover sent an open letter to Rowling via the social media service and identified herself as a survivor of bullying, sexual assault, and multiple suicide attempts. “I’m not proud of these things, but it’s who I am,” she wrote. “I’m also trying to stop my hardest to stop self-harming.”

To aid her recovery, the fan, who signed the letter Kate, asked Rowling to handwrite the phrase “Expecto patronum” — a protective spell in the Harry Potter mythos — so that she could tattoo it on her wrist for inspiration.

With a wave of her pen, Rowling obliged. “I love that you’re working to heal and protect yourself,” the author replied, while obliging with a photo of the handwritten magic words. “You deserve this. I hope it helps.”
