Julianna Margulies talks drinking on The Good Wife

As The Good Wife cast braces for its series finale on May 8, the stars insist there’s plenty of fun to be had. “We’re not saying goodbye,” explained Christine Baranski (Diane Lockhart) on Thursday’s episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “We’re just going to be great friends for life.”

For Julianna Margulies (Alicia Florrick), ending the show means the cast will be able to enjoy each other off set — and then some. “We won’t be together everyday, but at least we’ll be drinking when we’re together this time, so we can have fun,” she joked.

“There’s no drinking before?” said a confused Colbert.

“Not on set, dear God,” Margulies replied. (Indeed, as Margulies shared during the show’s farewell talk at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier in April, Alicia has been drinking Welch’s grape juice every time it looks like she’s sipping red wine.)

Even though the actors — including Matt Czuchry (Cary Agos) — were far away from the courtroom they dominate on the series, they still took on a hot-button issue with Colbert: cheating husbands. “Do you think it’s time for a woman to be a sleazeball and a man to stand next to her?” said Colbert, alluding to the support Alicia gives her husband Peter Florrick (Chris Noth) after his cheating scandal erupts in season 1. “Don’t you think we’ve come far enough as a nation that a man could have to stand embarrassed next to someone?”

Margulies replied, “It would be a miracle to see that happen. When we first started, I would get the question a lot, ‘Would this ever happen if the woman was the one who was the politician. When I started the show, I was a new mom and wife and doing 14 hours a day, and I looked at them and said, ‘Women don’t have time.'”

“I think it would be a wonderful thing to see, but I don’t think it would ever happen,” she continued. “Women are just too smart to do that. At least to do it and get caught! Yeah, I do believe women are above the level of taking a picture of things and tweeting them.”

With the zest of her powerful character, Baranski dismissed adultery as foolishness. “It’s just so silly,” she said. “It’s just so dumb to do that and not think you’re going to get caught. And yet the guys just keep doing it.”

Czuchry proved he’s learned a thing or two from working alongside the women, adding, “I agree — completely.”
